Congratulations to the winning states of this year's SLICE awards! These are all innovative programs advancing the state of clean energy policy in the country. 🙌 Of note, California launched the VERY FIRST flexible demand appliance **standard**. That's a big deal. The approach could be replicated for all sorts of appliances, including heat pumps, storage etc. Awesome work Deana Carrillo, MPP and team! "In 2023, the California Energy Commission created the first-in-the-world flexible demand appliance standards for residential swimming pool controls for water pumping and heating equipment. There are over 1 million pools in the state, making pool controls an ideal candidate for the new FDAS regulations that employ load shifting and time-of-use rates to avoid emissions associated with electricity generation during peak demand. Flexible demand technologies enable an appliance to schedule, shift, or curtail electrical demand with the consumer’s consent. The standards for pool controls will save ratepayers millions of dollars, improve the reliability and resilience of the electric grid, and improve air quality."

I was delighted to see the Connecticut Green Bank win one of the Clean Energy States Alliance (CESA) awards for 2024 State Leadership in Clean Energy for its Green Liberty Notes Program. Congrats to the team! At Raise Green we worked tirelessly with the CT Green Bank team (Bryan Garcia, Bert Hunter, Eric Shrago, David Beech, Rudy Sturk and many more) over several years to imagine, structure, and deliver this program so it can provide small-dollar investors with the opportunity to support and benefit from clean energy development. It is the first one-year maturity designated green bond offered via a crowdfunding campaign, meeting the Green Bond principles of the ICMA - International Capital Market Association, and it's accessible to accredited and non-accredited investors with an easy online process that doesn’t involve a broker. Great write-up from CESA: "Investments start at $100 and are capped at $25,000, with priority given to smaller investments. This innovation makes it possible for everyone, regardless of income, to invest in Connecticut’s clean energy transition. Like other savings instruments, such as certificates of deposit, a competitive market rate of interest is paid at maturity (the previous offering was between 5-5½ percent). To date, more than $2 million in investment has been raised through the notes to support energy efficiency retrofits for small businesses. According to the judges: “The Connecticut Green Bank’s Green Liberty Notes Program is innovative and opens the rewards of the clean energy economy to a new community, extending the benefits so everyone can participate. The threshold to entry is low and the return on investment is good. Over the past year, there has been strong demand for energy storage resources from utilities as well as C&I customers – and that surge in interest and deployment has certainly continued into 2024. 📖 The U.S. energy storage market set a Q1 2024 installation record, up 84% from Q1 2023, according to American Clean Power Association (ACP)’s new US Energy Storage Monitor report. This kind of sustained growth shows the need and interest for batteries playing a critical role on our nation’s electric grids. It’s also why our CMBlu Energy, Inc. team was proud to be part of this year’s ACP Clean Power on the Hill event to advocate for further renewable energy and energy storage investment. 🔋    U.S. President Giovanni Damato and Head of Special Projects Julie M. Royes spoke with key policymakers in Congress about the fast-growing need for medium and long duration energy storage and how continuing to fund renewable energy tax incentives, better establishing property rights for clean energy project development, and passing permitting reform legislation can help advance the larger clean energy transition. 🔋 Exciting news for Rhode Island's clean energy future! On June 26, Governor Daniel McKee signed the 2024 Energy Storage Systems Act into law, marking a pivotal step towards a 100% clean energy goal. Championed by State Senator Dawn Euer, Esq. and State Representative Arthur Handy, this Act aims to revolutionize the state's energy landscape. "Energy storage is flexible, reliable, and affordable—a game changer for Rhode Island’s power grid," said Kat Burnham, Rhode Island State Lead at Advanced Energy United. Key features of the Act include: - Storge Targets: 90 MW by 2026, 195 MW by 2028, and 600 MW by 2033. - Infrastructure Programs: Rhode Island Infrastructure Bank will promote energy storage adoption. - Storage Procurements: The Rhode Island Public Utility Commission can mandate cost-effective storage system procurements. I’m excited to be in Boulder, CO this week with the CHARGED Initiative from April 10-12. Led by GridLab, RMI, and Advanced Energy United, the initiative will host several discussions on how we can move forward in developing a grid capable of meeting the demands from electrification while also leveraging at-home solar technologies. Electrification is critical to decarbonizing the transportation, commercial, and residential sectors, and the distribution system must be ready to handle these new loads.  A recent California Public Utilities study estimated that it will cost $50 billion by 2035 to accommodate a high electrification future. However, this estimate does NOT account for how distributed energy resources, like home solar and batteries, can reduce costs and manage loads. It’s imperative that we include distributed energy resources in our discussions about how we build a more sustainable grid and use these valuable resources to provide flexibility and manage load. I am looking forward to discussing more about this topic at the Grid Connection workstream at the event.
