And we didn’t even have to sponsor it! Paul M. Williams, Daniel Catalfumo Florida Power & Light has a ten year plan. What’s your public utility doing? Trying to retrofit chargers into existing properties can result in “conduits running all over the place, like spaghetti, through your whole garage.” You have to plan for it or else you’ll miss out on the opportunity. This is a good example of where utility EV charging investment belongs. This investment should be funded by shareholders and not part of ratepayer costs.
It’s National Drive Electric Week, and at Portland General Electric, we are working to plan for, serve, and manage the incredible growth in electric vehicles we are seeing in Oregon. Already, 1 in 6 new cars sold is an EV and, by 2025, about 250,000 EVs will be on Oregon roads. As we see more EVs on our roads, it’s critical that all Oregonians, regardless of income or the type of residence they live in, have access to reliable and affordable EV charging. At PGE, we are partnering with communities in our service area to make EV chargers more accessible to everyone—including those who live in apartments and multi-family residences. This year, we are working to install accessible and affordable charging stations on utility poles to make it easier for customers charge their EVs who might not otherwise have access to home charging options. Installing the chargers on utility poles lowers the cost of installation and allows drivers with on-street parking to charge their EVs.

The pressure is on for building owners and operators to get EV ready! With 28 million charging ports required to meet EV adoption goals by 2030, buildings play a major role in ensuring drivers can charge when needed. Retrofits EV installations in particular can present a host of challenges. Due to factors such as location, existing electrical infrastructure, and tenant demand, charging deployment processes vary from building to building. EV charging and energy management solutions (like SWTCH Control) can ease the burden of retrofitting by helping buildings effortlessly manage their energy use and plan for increased demand, as more tenants inevitably choose to go electric. Navigating EV Charging, Contracts, Infrastructure, Deployment: Attorney - Consultant - EV Industry Thought Leader
Now this is something I can sink my teeth into! Best line in this article: "One of the most significant hurdles to getting more chargers up and running in commercial buildings is education." Kudos to author @hollydutton for getting this straight! As a professional, especially in a such unique space, I feel like most of my day is spent as a teacher. Almost like a second job. Figuring out if EV infrastructure makes sense for a real estate client, is as much about education, as it is about helping a client figure out the optimal legal and business structure for their infrastructure investments. What about you? How frequently are you teaching and educating your clients and customers vs. "doing the work"? Let me know in the comments how you juggle those competing priorities to give your clients and customers maximum value. I'm sure we can all learn from each other!
