Advances in Transmission technology are huge. As of 2023, the U.S. has about 2.6 terawatts (TW) of renewable energy projects awaiting interconnection, which is more than twice the current installed generation capacity of 1.28 TW. Most of this backlog consists of solar (1,080 GW) and wind (366 GW), with significant growth in battery storage (1,030 GW).

DOE Grid Deployment Office just announced $2.2B federal investment (catalyzing another $8B in private and non-federal investment) in eight transmission and storage projects across the country! These types of deployments are exactly what we need to get to liftoff for advanced grid technologies -- with these projects unlocking 13+ GWs worth of capacity (including 4+ GW of OSW), enhancing grid reliability and resilience, and improving affordability outcomes for American households. Our STEP Demo pilot plant has completed Phase 1 testing! Generating enough power for 4,000 homes/hour, this project demonstrates commercial readiness of the sCO2 power cycle. TODAY: U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced $10.6 million in funding for six projects to improve state and regional engagement in wholesale electricity markets. As more clean and renewable resources come online, creating more flexible and efficient markets would not only ensure a reliable supply of electricity, but also help keep prices low for consumers. Utilities, state agencies, and market operators themselves have valuable perspectives on how to address these challenges. This funding will support these stakeholders in providing critical insight into market design, expansion, and improvement activities, including interregional transmission infrastructure development. We recently marked a key milestone by opening the new GE Vernova Electrification Center and its High Voltage Direct Current (HDVC) Competence Center in Berlin, a key nucleus for Europe’s #EnergyTransition.   The facility serves as an essential hub for GE Vernova’s European #electrification activities, helping to develop leading technologies that will help improve grid stability and integrate more renewable energy across Germany and Europe. #HVDC systems are essential for achieving both electrification and decarbonisation goals, enabling the efficient transmission of power over long distances and simplifying renewable integration.   ⚡ We welcomed the German Transmission System Operators representatives of TenneT TSO GmbH and 50Hertz Transmission GmbH as speakers at the opening.   The expansion of our Berlin center reaffirms our commitment to help Europe to decarbonise while meeting the growing demand for renewable electricity.
