What does it take to build a successful career in investment management? And how do we inspire the next generation to pursue their passion in this field? Last week, Lesley Lanefelt, our Head of Nordic Investments, was invited by GAIN UK to speak at the 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 event, organized by Stockholms universitet's student association Föreningen Ekonomerna 👩🎓 Lesley shared insights from her career and provided a closer look at what working in investment management entails, highlighting the diverse career paths available in the industry. She also dispelled common myths about the profession. Her practical advice resonated strongly, sparking meaningful discussions about the future of careers in finance. At Velo Capital, we’re happy to support initiatives like these that raise awareness, nurture talent, and foster a more inclusive financial industry. A big thank you to Föreningen Ekonomerna, Stockholm University, GAIN, and the engaged audience for making this such an inspiring event 💫

How does one interpret the #performance of an #investmentportfolio? As fund managers or financial advisers, evaluating the performance of an investment portfolio and accessing pertinent information are crucial. Professors Georges Hübner from the HEC Liège in Belgium and @Pascal Francois at HEC Montréal, Canada, comprehensively address these queries in their extensive work, ‘The Complete Guide to Portfolio Performance‘, spanning over 1,000 pages. This book, endorsed by Nobel laureate William Sharpe, an authority in risk-return analysis, aims to become the definitive text in its field. For Investment Officer BE, Bruno Iserbyt spoke to Professor Hübner: https://lnkd.in/gMJZpX2G

I’m thrilled to share a project that has been born out of passion, ambition, and dedication: Alcalá Equity Partners. This organisation is a student-driven initiative aimed at transforming the way young minds approach finance, investments, and the stock market. What started as our participation in the prestigious National University Stock Market League of Spain | Liga de Bolsa has now evolved into a mission to empower the next generation of financial leaders. This competition marks the beginning of an incredible journey where we aim to refine our financial knowledge, sharpen our investment strategies, and test our skills in a dynamic, real-world environment. 💡 Our Vision: We are here to revolutionise the financial advisory and investment industry. Combining education, practical experience, and connections, Alcalá Equity Partners is committed to creating a network where knowledge meets ambition to drive meaningful impact. 📈 Our Approach: We employ a disciplined Value Investing strategy, identifying undervalued opportunities to make informed, sustainable investments. Through the Stock Market League, we’ll refine our skills in portfolio management, risk analysis, and competitive decision-making-tools that will shape our future success. 🤝 Beyond Investing: Alcalá Equity Partners thrives on collaboration. We attend specialised events, connecting with senior professionals and high-profile leaders in finance, while providing our members with workshops, lectures, and networking opportunities to ensure continuous growth. And as we expand, we’re building our presence online to share our achievements, journey, and vision with the world. This project wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible teamwork of my colleagues, who share the same passion and determination to lead the new era of finance. Together, we are creating something special that merges ambition, education, and opportunity for young talent. We will keep you updated with new news! #AlcaláEquityPartners #Finance #Investing #Networking #Leadership #Growth #StockMarket #ValueInvesting

Today I sat my oral exam of Principles of Investment Finance, a summer course I took at Copenhagen Business School because I was interested in the subject. I think it's important to know at least a bit about finance, even though it may not necessarily align with one's career path. Which for me, as a Humanities graduate, it kind of doesn't. I learnt so much useful information, such as the characteristics of different types of securities, the process of an IPO, and the basics of fundamental analysis (which, if you suscribe to the weak form of the efficient market hypothesis, tells you which stock to buy) and technical analysis (a methodology that tells you when to buy it... though its efficacy is object of debate). I plan on expanding my new knowledge and apply it carefully to my personal finances. Hopefully, once I know more about the subject, I can contribute to initiatives that empower vulnerable communities. That's my wish for the future (but not necessarily a fixed plan yet). In the meantime, I'm celebrating the 12 (out of 12) I scored 🎉

S4:E6 of the graduate course on #SystemLevelInvesting at Columbia | SIPA is a wrap! For this sixth class of the course, Jon Lukomnik and I focused on the investment enhancement techniques of system-level investing that leverage firm resources across the investment process—investment policy and belief statements, investment strategy documentation, security selection and portfolio construction, engagement and activism, themed and targeted investments, and manager selection and monitoring—to exert influence on system dynamics. As guest speaker Anna Snider (Head of Investment Selection, Chief Investment Office, Global Wealth and Investment Management, Bank of America) helped to demonstrate, investment enhancement techniques use conventional investment activities to advance system-level goals (see the graphic for more details). This includes: 💡 Establishing standards that discourage investments in corporations, industries and countries with practices that violate broadly accepted standards or norms; 💡 Pursuing investments that can solve social and environmental challenges in ways that support the stability and enhancement of broader social, environmental, and financial systems; and 💡 Simultaneously utilizing a range of investment tools to comprehensively address complex systemic environmental and social concerns. Want to drop in on a class to see what all the fuss is about? DM me or Jon for details. Jon, Abha Nirula and I will be joined next by Ibrahim Rashid, MPP (Co-lead, Sustainable Investing Group, Marquette Associates). During this one, we’ll be exploring opportunity generation techniques that help to change what investors invest in. Think like a scientist 🔎 This was, in my opinion, one of the most universally applicable takeaways from the Investment Conference 2024 at Norges Bank Investment Management. So what does it entail? In both our professional and personal lives, we often base decisions on ideas and assumptions that could benefit from applying a more scientific mindset. Here's how: 💡 Hypothesize: Develop ideas based on your current knowledge and observations. 📚 Seek knowledge and contrary opinions: Look for supporting information, but perhaps more importantly, seek information and opinions that might invalidate your idea. 🔓 Be open to pivot: Don't get too attached to your idea - pivot or adjust when you realize you're wrong or when circumstances change. Adam Grant shared this concept, and several other speakers emphasized the importance of intellectual curiosity and honesty, which reinforces the message. I believe everyone can gain a lot from consciously applying this mindset to become more mindful of our ideas and decisions. Let me know if you want to hear more takeaways - there were plenty to choose from (or relive the experience yourself 👇)!
