🦄 "What concrete things are you doing on diversity, equity and inclusion?"
It's a question on every candidate's mind.
🏆 This week our transparency shoutout goes to a company that has one of the best employee handbooks around and a refreshing way of communicating their DEIB philosophy..."
🥁 🥁 🥁 🥁 🥁 🥁 🥁 🥁
Give it up for Juro!! 🎉🥳 👏
Tbh, their whole public handbook is a masterclass in 'show don't tell' but for this week's shoutout we wanted to celebrate in particular how they share their stance on DEIB.
You've all read the cookie-cutter statements that most plaster on their job ads. Not Juro. They get specific:
▪️What is diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging
▪️Why it matters to them
▪️How it impacts their hiring process
▪️How it connects to their values
▪️What specific initiatives and policies they are running in this space
▪️Resources on unconscious bias
...and they share their diversity data
Not from 2 years ago.

Great job Juro!!
👉 Check out the section on their employee handbook for inspo in co-creating your own with your team.
...Every week, we shine a spotlight on those companies leading the way in organisational transparency. Stay tuned for our next pioneer! 📆

Great things happen when we show employees they matter!
- Show them you value their hard work.
- Celebrate their achievements.
- Listen to their ideas. Value their perspective.
When employees feel appreciated and heard, they work even harder and help the whole company succeed.
Let's create a workplace where everyone knows their efforts count.
P.S. A little appreciation goes a long way. Let’s make every effort count.
The importance of names - Inspired by Fábio Carapinha
As professionals, we encounter a multitude of names every day—whether it’s during meetings, networking events, or casual conversations. Yet, how often do we pause to consider the significance of correctly pronouncing someone’s name? 🤔 I know I have butchered a name or two in my time.
🔍 My Name, My Heritage
It took me years to be proud of my name. Very few could pronounce it or spell it correctly, even extended family. Watching a teacher’s face contort as they struggled with my name was embarrassing. As a young person, I wondered, “What’s the point of having a name no one can pronounce?”
🔗 A Name with History
My last name labels me as a descendant of the slave trade—a stark reminder that slaves were stripped of their own names and given those of their owners. But my first name carries a different story.
🌟 The Black Power Movement and Unique Names
In the '60s and '70s, the Black Empowerment Movement emphasized that descendants of the slave trade were a distinct people. One way this idea was promoted was through unique names. My family chose my unique first name from a book, hoping that it's meaning would describe their daughter's destiny.
🌟 Embracing My Identity
Over the years, people encouraged me to change my name—to make it easier for others to accept me or avoid discrimination when applying for jobs. But I stood my ground, as I finally understood that my name was more than just a name.
My name means “one who reasons, bright, or intelligent.” I want employers to hire me for my intellect and for all of who I am, not just for an easy or relatable name. But, yeah, names are hard so I do offer a chance to meet in the middle.
🔑 A Trick to Remember
When I introduce myself, I share a trick to help people remember how to pronounce my name. It ties my name to something recognizable and serves as a great icebreaker. If we’ve met, you know it. Can you meet me halfway and remember it?
Let’s champion inclusion by pronouncing names with care. Share your thoughts below! 👇🏽

🤔 Ever had your name mispronounced in a hilariously wrong way? I have! My last name is Carapinha, so I've been associated with the cocktail Caipirinha more times than I can count.🍹😉
But here's why getting names right is no joke:
🌍 Diversity & Inclusion: Knowing and pronouncing names correctly fosters an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued.
👥 Building Trust: Research from the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology highlights that correctly pronouncing someone’s name increases trust and rapport, which are crucial for effective teamwork and collaboration.
📈 Employee Engagement: Small gestures, like making the effort to learn and pronounce names correctly, can significantly boost employee engagement and morale.
🗣️ Cultural Competence: In our globalized world, cultural competence is key. Properly pronouncing names is a simple yet powerful way to show respect and appreciation for different cultures, enhancing workplace harmony.
So, next time you meet someone new, take a moment to learn and pronounce their name correctly. It's a small step that makes a big difference. And who knows, you might avoid calling your colleague a cocktail! Cheers to a more inclusive and engaging workplace! 🍹
