We’ve all heard that AI is transforming the world- and if you’re in the job market you certainly know how it’s affecting job applications and enhancing resumes. But what does this mean on the receiving end of those resumes? As a recruiter, I see really great resumes and profiles every day. Sometimes they match what the candidate can talk about, and other times it’s clear the candidate oversold themselves. For those candidates who work hard to make their resumes represent what they do- and get frustrated having to repeat things to a recruiter that are already clearly listed on your resume, please remember that for every one of you out there, we find a lot more who can’t easily discuss what’s on their resume. That’s why we have to ask the questions anyways. For those who have done a lot but have a hard time putting your thoughts together in an interview- take note of the danger of being put into the category of someone who oversold themselves. There is a difference in hearing a candidate who can confidently answer questions compared to the candidate who repeats the question to buy time while they type it in and wait for an AI response that they read back. Never underestimate the value of being able to clearly explain what you do and how it relates to the role you’re discussing. This is what will set you apart in a world filled with candidates who have used AI tools to make their resumes sound amazing. Knowledge and experience still trump AI when it comes to talking about what you’ve done and what you’ll bring to the team.
