Did you know that schoolchildren spend 8-900 hours at school each year? ⌚ That’s a lot of time, so our children should have the best indoor spaces to live, play, and learn in. As Europe, including the UK, faces a surge in school construction, it’s key that our architects and educators rethink school design. Here are three key elements that can improve school environments 👇

The future of education depends on our willingness to think creatively and embrace innovation at every level—whether it's designing the physical space, implementing new teaching methods, or creating environments that support student well-being. For school architects, educators, and interior designers, the challenge lies in staying AHEAD of the curve, seeking out NEW ideas, and always asking HOW we can make our schools better for the next generation of learners. In the end, the greatest innovation in school design is one that puts students at the center of the conversation—or as well like to call it—being #RadicallyStudentCentered™. Raymond C. “Flexible, dynamic environments that accommodate learning and social activities, responding to evolving needs of modern education.” A true collaboration with our project partners Mayoh Architects, the design for Macarthur Anglican School’s specialist senior learning facility the Warren Integrated Studies Hub reflects a deep understanding of the evolving needs of modern education. Responding to changes in the school’s educational program and recognising the proven benefits of outdoor learning, the spaces have been designed to offer flexible, nurturing, dynamic environments that accommodate a variety of learning and social activities. These spaces encourage hands-on exploration, connectivity, critical thinking, and creativity, allowing students to engage with their surroundings in a meaningful way. Each learning space has landscape views and access to outdoor learning spaces. The open-ended nature of the design lets students connect with the natural environment, whilst interpreting and using the space dynamically, fostering independence and collaboration. Gone are the days of rigid, traditional classrooms; today’s school designs prioritise adaptability, creativity, and student-centric spaces. A child’s learning outcome is heavily influenced by the design of their school. In recent years, flexible designs with a holistic, whole-life approach have been popular because they support health safety procedures that are required in the new normal. A progressive school focuses on learning via hands-on projects and activities. What’s the point of an evaluation of school buildings just after they’ve been built? The 2025 Mayfield Project brings together some of Australasia’s brightest education, design and architecture talent to explore a different major theme every two years. NoTosh has designed and facilitated it for the past 14 years for Learning Environments Australasia. In 2025, it’s the turn of participants to take a second look at “Post-Occupancy Evaluations”. Should they not really be called “Post-Design Evaluations”? And what’s the point if there’s a limit to how much a new space can be further tweaked or overhauled? Do we learn enough from one community’s space use to inform how the next school will benefit? And is that the best value way of engaging communities in designing better spaces? So many questions and about four months to answer them (and come up with more questions on top!). Great facilitation from Jeremy Weinstein, PhD and Athole McLauchlan (he/him). #architecture #design #schooldesign

We are excited to introduce CTBUH-Skyline Architects Society (SAS) in partnership with Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) at Illinois Institute of Technology CTBUH-SAS is a student-led initiative by Masters of Tall Buildings and Vertical Urbanism students. We are dedicated to fostering collaboration between emerging architects, engineers, and industry leaders to explore the future of tall buildings, urban environments, and sustainable design. Our goal is to create a platform for students to engage in meaningful discussions, connect with professionals, and contribute to research in high-rise architecture and urban development. Through guest lectures, workshops and networking opportunities, we aim to bridge the gap between academia and industry. A special thanks to Francisco Javier Quintana de Uña, as well as Jessica Kok and Yohan Kim for their guidance and support in helping us launch this new student organization. We appreciate their commitment to empowering students and advancing the field of tall building design. Stay tuned for upcoming events, opportunities, and ways to get involved! If you're passionate about tall buildings, future cities, and sustainable urban development, we’d love to connect.

As the demands of higher education change rapidly, flexibility in education estates is essential for optimising space in new builds or refurbishments. Director Andrew Baker discusses how investing in adaptability in an educational facility design can lead to high-quality, inspirational learning environments that are ready to meet future challenges in the educational landscape. Coleg Penybont | Bridgend College demonstrates this commitment through its development of The STEAM Academy - a flexible, high-quality facility with adaptable spaces that meet diverse teaching needs while also reducing construction costs. Community colleges are more attractive than ever—by design and reputation, as we share in our latest #Insights article. A true labor of love, our teams design and develop strategic plans, renovation, reuse, and new building projects that honor these institutions’ standing in their communities, strengthen their ties to area universities and employers, and welcome the broadly diverse population of their students. “We are saying with our actions that, like four-year universities, #communitycolleges also deserve architecture with a big ‘A,’ because the work they are doing is very impactful indeed,” says Omar Calderon, AIA, principal at Perkins Eastman.
