𝗜𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝘆𝗽𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵?! 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸! Recently more and more people have been asking if defense tech is overhyped and if VC’s have created a FOMO for joining in dual use and defense investments 💭 Sifted put things into perspective quite neatly here 👇 Yes, there is a lot of talk among VC’s about Defense tech but spending is very consistent (at around $2.5 billion per year) and still way behind other sectors, like health and AI 🤖 What I think we are seeing is not necessarily the downturn of defense tech - we are seeing the end of the euphoria 💡 After Russias invasion of Ukraine #DefTech was often hailed as the cure to European negligence towards common defense. Many hoped we would see the birth of a new dual use and defense economy 📈 Now reality has taken over. Investors are slowly realising that defense remains a market with high barriers to entry and with long term procurement and - despite the ongoing war - constant budgetary restraints 🚥 So, the hype is about to be over - yes. But this is not the end of DefTech. Now is the time to get serious about your investments and to really look at what you think has a future. So while the hype is over, the time for defense tech is only beginning 🚀 📲 https://lnkd.in/e2YKn6zD

Fascinating article about Silicon Valley, the development of military hardware and Anduril in particular. Corporate governance matters. Businesses need a transparent corporate purpose and clear accountability, with good regulation shaping markets to ensure capitalism works for society at large. Silicon Valley leads on many things, but corporate governance and accountability is not one of them. What could possibly go wrong?

Insightful post by AIN Ventures. Venture capital plays a crucial role in Defense Tech. During the formative years of modern-day venture capital, from the 1950s to the 1970s, investors predominantly focused on hardware technologies. This period saw a surge in investments toward tangible, hardware-based innovations essential for defense, aerospace, and manufacturing. The onset of the personal computer and related software in the 1980s caused a massive shift in VC focus. My colleague and our defense tech expert, Benjamin Lawrence just put together this amazing market map on the AI in defense tech space (link in comments) and it got me thinking... Whether it's investors like Andreessen Horowitz, Shield Capital, and IQT (In-Q-Tel) dedicating entire funds towards defense tech, established companies like L3Harris Technologies now actively embracing and collaborating with new entrants in the defense market, or that sweet sweet defense contract money companies can snatch up, there's no denying the sector is taking off 🚀 So how many new entrants are there? Well, by doing a quick filter in Ben's expert-curated defense tech folder, you can see that >10% of the companies were founded in 2021 or later. Pretty cool to see.

www.mywealthai.com.au DroneShield's recent announcement of a tenfold revenue increase in Q1 2024 to $16.4 million has been turning heads in the investment community, signifying not just a phase of growth, but a leap into a new era of profitability and strategic market positioning. This impressive growth, highlighted by their pivot to profitability in 2023, is underpinned by key strategic initiatives and an opportune market environment. A pivotal factor in DroneShield's success is its substantial investment in AI research and development, coupled with enhancing its Software as a Service (SaaS) model, which saw revenues doubling in the first quarter of 2024. This indicates a forward-looking approach, banking on the exponential growth potential of technology-driven solutions in defense sectors. The company's robust $161 million pro-forma cash balance—free from debt or convertibles—places it in an enviable financial position. This strong balance sheet equips DroneShield with the flexibility to pursue aggressive R&D initiatives and capitalize on emerging opportunities without the constraints of financial encumbrances. However, with great growth comes the challenge of sustaining it. The defence sector, while lucrative, is notoriously volatile, subject to geopolitical shifts and budgetary constraints. DroneShield's recent NATO Framework Agreement underscores its potential to navigate these waters by tapping into stable, long-term revenue streams. Yet investors should remain cognizant of the inherent risks in global defense markets—such as regulatory hurdles and competition from legacy players and new entrants. For investors intrigued by DroneShield's trajectory, it's critical to balance enthusiasm with due diligence. The company's strategic positioning and product innovation suggest a promising outlook, but as with all investments, understanding the market dynamics and potential risks is paramount. As DroneShield ventures into its next growth phase, keeping a close eye on its operational execution, market expansion strategies, and geopolitical developments will be key for investors looking to ride the wave of next-gen defense technology. #newera #firstquarter #droneshield #asx #smsf #wealthmanagement

Sadly, this is our new reality. Advanced dual-use technology can now cross borders and suddenly appear at scale in new weapons systems. Our world is rapidly becoming much more dangerous, and I don't think our society has a workable response. We think venture capital will be part of the solution, and crucially, how to evaluate and execute investments that make the world safer. https://lnkd.in/e2qtdu-h
