Growth of #biotech #clusters over several decades through pioneering, variety and entrepreneurial science - A Belgium analysis in Nature Biotechnology. Conclusions : - The regional level pioneering has a long and lasting impact. The analysis reveals that the impact of early investments in an emerging field such as biotech spans more than three decades. - Both the quantity and quality of the science do matter, even during the more mature stages of the industry. - The study point to the relevance of networks with partners situated outside the region or cluster. - Finally, these findings convey a comforting message for regions that are not heavily populated by large incumbent (multinational) firms.
