Like a couple of years ago… I saw my nephew busy on phone ( like always), this time he was periodically pointing phone in random directions and then immediately went back to doing something on phone. Out of curiosity, I asked him, what was he upto, he said, he is maintaining his “Snap streak”, I then asked, what does he get out of it, he chuckled and faced to the other side and continued. Later in the week, I read an article where a start up is making a tinder like app but you match with AI GF/BF In my mind, I was like, this generation is all spoilt. We may become species without emotions …Bla bla bla…bla bla bla… After a few months, I came across this article, which said, we now have a generation which was born with mobile phones. This very statement was like aha moment. I was now able to connect the dots. For the present generation, virtual is the new real. They grew up watching rhymes on phones, they are used to seeing their parents on phone / computers and that’s what they are now. Devices are their extended body parts. I am sure when TV came in, there was older generation which was pessimistic about it and we are exactly at that cross roads. We can either choose to accept the new reality or live in denial as the world moves on. From a business stand point, brands can either choose to pick the AI way or perish. My phone can do almost everything, but it cannot make me think. The other day, I unashamedly declared that my smartphone was making me lazy and stupid, and wow, did that spark some interesting reactions! People shared their perspectives, and naturally, I couldn’t resist digging deeper. I looked up some of the commenters, read their posts, and did my usual fact-checking on Google. I even followed a few links to get the full picture on the topics they brought up. And guess what? My phone wasn’t making me stupid at all. In fact, it was doing the opposite—it was making me smarter. The more I explored, the more I realized that it’s not the device; it’s how we use it. With AI at my fingertips, finding information is a breeze. Whether I’m converting Fahrenheit to Celsius, figuring out the quickest route to a destination, or snapping a picture from a catalogue to find a cheaper version of that suitcase, I get my answers in seconds. My smartphone only makes me stupid if I’m too lazy to think. Quick access to info anytime, anywhere is like sugar-free candy. It’s sweet, but it’s not enough if you want real results. You still need to put in some effort. So, use those brain cells — learn, problem-solve, and create something meaningful with all that new knowledge. So, here’s my feel-good moment: My phone won’t make me stupid as long as I use what I’ve learned in a way that helps my new found knowledge stick. It’s laziness that makes me stupid, not the phone. How much of your day is controlled by an algorithm? We have become a code-dependent culture where algorithms are optimizing our every day activity. From the way we sleep to the way we interact with news and information. There is an algorithm for everything. There are benefits to some of this of course, but the real concern is the amount of control we give up to corporations and institutions that aren't looking out for our best interest. It couldn't be more obvious right now during the US election where we end up in these echo chambers of groupthink with a light sprinkle of polarizing conflict. This is by design. The average adult spends 11 hours per day interacting with media, TV, computers, smartphones and other devices, and the majority of this is driven by an algorithm designed to capture your attention and keep it for as long as possible. These tools shape our thoughts, habits and behaviours so unconsciously that most people aren't aware of what's behind it all. I believe one of the most valuable things a person can do today is to question the invisible hand guiding our daily lives and break the pixels governing our attention to reclaim some of that autonomy. We have more capacity to adapt to change than we give ourselves credit for. Until 1993, the only telephones I knew were land line phones - one at home or office, and the other kind was a public phone used with 10, 20 and 50 cent coins. All phones were fixed in specific places. In 1995 I got my first mobile phone, a Nokia. Although I had never thought I needed a cellphone until I got one, in a few months I couldn’t leave home without it. Also, as a BlackBerry user I never imagined that I could enjoy a touch screen phone. I bought a touch screen iPhone as an experiment and I’m still enjoying that expensive experiment. About a decade later, I heard people talk about Facebook. What an unnecessary thing it was for me. Perhaps I even judged those time wasters who were using it. Not long after judging others I joined Facebook, Instagram and later LinkedIn. I started using social media platforms only because I wanted to understand them as marketing channels for engaging with target markets in a digital world. Now I love social media, not just for brands…but for me personally. A couple years after the 2010 soccer World Cup, I started using a tablet device. I was a late comer to the tablet because I genuinely thought I only needed a laptop. I still use the laptop for producing and the tablet mostly for consuming. I enjoy the convenience of a tablet. Although we had been using AI daily but unknowingly, last year ChatGPT reintroduced us to AI more overtly. Now I use ChatGPT in the same way I’ve been doing Google searches for many years. I don’t know where AI is going and I have ethical concerns about it. However, I don’t have doubts about its power and benefits I derive from it. Once again, I’m adapting to something previously unknown to me. I know I can change and adapt. I hope I’ve reminded you that you’ve adapted and changed many times before…and not just in the technology arena. Don’t be scared to do change again. #EmbraceChange to benefit from change. You are not fixed like a lighthouse. You can adjust and move. #change #adjustment #growth #learning #adapting
