🗞️ CEO at kompreno | Quality Journalism meets Language Technology | AI-enabled briefings and dossiers for international people and organisation development 🤖
"Just as binging on an unhealthy diet can make us low-energy, overweight, and prone to disease, we should be mindful of the information we feed into our brains. We may feel the need at times to shut ourselves off. But ideas and solutions that arise in another culture can be uniquely inspiring, like a new tool added to our tool-box." My talk at TEDxTUDarmstadt e.V. started with the most personal story of how a misunderstanding once put my life in danger. How I embarked on a mission to use language technology for the good of our civilisation. In a digitally hyper-connected world that's overflowing with AI-gernerated websites and videos, journalists are no longer gatekeepers, they are our navigators, our stewards, our guardians of reliable information. Journalism, however, is in a deep, structural crisis. If we lose it, we may also lose our freedom. But there is hope: Popping our language bubbles will give us new momentum, strengthen our identity, and boost the European idea. For here in Europe, our diversity and ingenuity are superpowers. A world with no language barriers will be a better world. And Europe is where we will make it happen. Watch here: https://lnkd.in/e7_54bJ4

🚀 Proud to have been part of the transformative MANILA24 workshop at SIGIR 2024 on July 18, 2024, in Washington D.C.! 🌟 I had the privilege of delivering a keynote on "Make a Rigorous Assessment of Relevant Climate Literature: Methods and Procedures." In my presentation, I highlighted two key challenges in climate literature retrieval: 🔹 The sheer volume and diverse sources of climate literature: Managing and synthesizing vast amounts of data from various formats (text, PDFs, images, videos) is crucial for accurate climate impact assessments. 🔹 Data types and integration: Ensuring the seamless integration of structured and unstructured data to provide comprehensive insights for researchers and policymakers. Addressing these challenges requires the advanced capabilities of AI and machine learning to efficiently process and analyze climate literature, enabling more effective decision-making. The MANILA24 workshop was a half-day event dedicated to developing a research agenda for information retrieval (IR) for climate impact, fostering collaboration, and discussing innovative solutions with global experts. Let’s continue to advance climate impact research and policy-making! #ClimateChange #InformationRetrieval #SIGIR2024 #AIforGood #Sustainability https://lnkd.in/g4_FksdF

Driving digital transformation to deliver innovative, energy-efficient solutions that enhance occupant comfort, safety, and compliance, while boosting efficiency and advancing sustainability in the built environment
🌟 Insights from the 'AI for Good' Event: Diverging Perspectives on AI by Sam Altman and Geoffrey Hinton 🌟 The recent 'AI for Good' event was a fascinating experience, particularly hearing the differing viewpoints from two of the most influential figures in AI: Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, and Geoffrey Hinton, a pioneering AI researcher. Here are some key differences in their perspectives: 1. Existential Threat of AI: Hinton : Expresses significant concerns about the potential for AI to surpass human intelligence and the associated risks. He emphasizes the need for deep understanding and robust regulation. Altman : Acknowledges the risks but promotes an iterative deployment strategy to balance AI’s benefits with safety measures. He believes in learning and adapting through real-world applications. 2. Interpretability and Safety: Hinton: Stresses the importance of understanding AI at a granular level to ensure safety and prevent harmful behaviors. Altman: Advocates for a holistic approach to safety, integrating various methods like monitoring and alignment research, even if detailed neuron-level understanding is not achieved. 3. Human-like AI: Hinton: Warns about AI developing sub-goals that could be harmful and believes AI can have subjective experiences. Altman: Emphasizes designing AI to be human-compatible, using natural language and intuitive interfaces while viewing AI as an alien intelligence. 4. Bias and Inequality: Hinton: Concerned about AI increasing wealth inequality and advocates for strong regulation and measures like Universal Basic Income. Altman: More optimistic about AI’s potential to help underserved communities and improve access to resources. He highlights initiatives like OpenAI for Nonprofits. 5. Regulation and Governance: Hinton: Calls for significant regulation and funding for AI safety to prevent harmful outcomes. Altman: Supports iterative deployment and preparedness frameworks, believing in the co-evolution of society and technology. 6. Long-term vs Short-term Focus: Hinton: Focuses on long-term existential risks and the fundamental changes AI could bring to society. Altman: Balances long-term and short-term concerns, emphasizing the immediate benefits and challenges of deploying AI safely. 7. Scientific and Technological Optimism: Hinton: Recognizes AI’s potential in scientific breakthroughs but remains cautious about broader implications. Altman: Highly optimistic about AI’s impact on various sectors and emphasizes making these tools widely accessible. The event highlighted the importance of considering diverse perspectives in the development and regulation of AI. Both viewpoints offer valuable insights as we navigate the future of this transformative technology. #AI #AIGood #Technology #Innovation #Regulation #Safety #FutureTech #AIethics #MachineLearning #ArtificialIntelligence https://lnkd.in/gzWcsRth
