"A carbon credit is essentially a faith-based mechanism" Verdantix Senior Analyst Connor Taylor dives into the carbon credit debate in his thought-provoking session on the complexities of generic carbon offsets and carbon dioxide removal. Some of Connor's key insights include that: - The value of a carbon credit is largely found in the trust that people place in it, and the extent that it enables corporate claims making - Some credits, while effective, are hugely limited by low availability and high cost, for instance direct air capture (DAC) - The durability of credits must be considered, for example nature-based carbon removal instances where wildfires have destroyed offsetting forests #CarbonRemoval #CarbonCredits #Decarbonization #ClimateSummitNA #NetZero #DirectAirCapture #CarbonOffsetting

Carbon projects often address more than just carbon dioxide. Carbon credits fund science and technology advancements and provide the capital required to implement new operational processes where there are regulatory gaps and where it would otherwise be cost prohibitive. At Anew Climate, our vast portfolio of projects are funding critical work to reduce, remove, and avoid emissions across industries, including many that address methane. CarbiCrete #technology can be used to permanently sequester #emissions in #concrete via #carbon mineralization. This permanent removal of emissions from the atmosphere can generate high-quality, high-value carbon #removal credits that are essential for a well-rounded approach to combatting #climatechange. "Almost all current removal efforts come from traditional land management. Less than 1% comes from #innovative removal technologies." Warner Norcross + Judd's Kurt Kissling and M. Johnny Pinjuv write: You may have heard the terms “carbon capture,” “carbon sequestration” or “carbon credits” floating around lately and wondered what they mean. To be brief, carbon capture is the general term for the process of physically capturing and compressing carbon dioxide (CO2) that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere – while carbon sequestration is the process of permanently storing CO2 underground. Now you might be wondering, why are people talking about this? That is where “carbon credits” come into the picture. #carboncapture #carboncredits #carbonsequestration #carbonemissions #environment

Professional Analyst and Researcher in the Energy Sector. Zonal Analyst at National Energy System Operator (NESO). My views are my own. Professional: BREEAM AP, AFHEA, AMEI
I am always puzzled by the concept of 'carbon offset'; I don't know how it can actually work in real life. I was told the pellets were completely safe and environmentally friendly to use; the toxins released after burning them were 'negligible'. It sounds more like 'free fuel' to use; we just need to plant more trees and look after them, then burn them for energy. Until today, I read Dieter's new piece: 'Step forward the DRAX power station, burning wood pellets in the UK offset by planting new trees in the US. Never mind that the pellets emit lots of carbon in the UK and lots of PM2.5 particles too. Those new trees in the US will soak all that up. And, even better, all those UK emissions don’t count in the UK net zero target, because they are offset in the US'. "I am lost again; it doesn't sound like a sensible and smart solution to the climate change issue, but more like an excuse, maybe, if I understood it correctly. Can anyone share some thoughts on this? Thanks.
Natural carbon offsets are at best very limited contributions to achieving the net zero targets Read my latest paper here: https://lnkd.in/eHqGZ9bz #thesustainableeconomy #carbonoffsetting
