A little piece of history! We were lucky enough to get a square of metal cladding from the former Debenhams department store which was clad in thousands of suspended aluminium panels to create a constantly-moving, fluid effect. The 334 Oxford Street development is now underway, having topped out recently. More #Bristol #redevelopment news. What are your thoughts on this? This proposal by AWW would make this the tallest building in Bristol, and with the other proposed development in and around the #BearPit, in the next 5 years the entire area would be almost unrecongisable. Which is genuinelly quitye exciting for the city, which seems to be a hot bed of redevelopment. The old Debenhams is an eyesore, especially all boarded up, something needs to be done with it to help the area and help the declining retail sector but is replacing it with a 28-storey tower the right answer? The plan promises economic benefits including 264 new jobs and an additional 380 construction jobs as well as an additional £11m a year in spending. Under plans drawn up by the #London and Bristol-based practice and submitted to Bristol City Council in November, the unlisted 1950s sandstone building would be demolished to make way for a 502-apartment tower. https://lnkd.in/e7f8JWXe via Architects’ Journal #design #business #architecture #change #environment #ConstructionNews mustard

Sterling looks to new concept to double business Sterling Home is looking to double the group’s turnover by rolling out a new smaller store format. The chain will turn to its Forrest Furnishing brand, best known among shoppers in Glasgow and to the west of the city, for the smaller format. Stores will be about 10,000sqft along with a mezzanine floor and is aimed at locations across Scotland that cannot support a full-format Sterling Home store. These include Perth, Dumbarton and central Aberdeen. Between 10-15 branches are planned, with a focus on upholstery, dining and bedroom. Space restraints mean flooring will not feature, unlike the Sterling Home branches. Funding for the expansion has been agreed as part of a new banking package which the group expects to be completed in the coming weeks. https://lnkd.in/erNSAqr2 #furnitureindustry #retail #retailindustry

Big Moves in Retail Flooring: John Lewis & Partners x Tapi Carpets & Floors John Lewis has just announced a major partnership with Tapi Carpets, bringing dedicated in-store concessions to 17 of its locations - starting with Oxford Street next month and rolling out across the UK by summer 2025. This follows the collapse of The Floor Room, John Lewis’s previous flooring partner, which went into administration last August due to financial struggles at its parent company, Carpetright. Tapi later acquired key assets from Carpetright, including its brand, IP, and 54 stores, positioning itself as a dominant player in the flooring industry. It looks like a strategic power move - one where the Harris family, despite having sold off Carpetright, ended up back in control of key assets without its debt burden.
