Our latest Voice of Ukraine report, examines the evolving perspectives and experiences of our respondents over the course of 18 months from June 2022 to November 2023. One insight we found is that there are distinct and different intentions between respondents who have migrated to Poland vs those who have migrated to Germany. In Poland the priority focus is to work, whereas in Germany the priority focus is to study. By documenting the migration routes of displaced Ukrainians and identifying how the situations of respondents are evolving, our longitudinal study enables policy makers and institutions to design and implement appropriate policies and support structures. In our last wave of longitudinal research for our study, Voice of Ukraine, we see a notable shift with 22% of respondents now intending to settle outside Ukraine, up from 8% in June 2022. This trend suggests a decline in the number of displaced Ukrainians who are intending to return to Ukraine in the future. As our study continues, we are potentially seeing an emergence of displaced Ukrainian diasporas across the EU, as Ukrainians and their families settle into work, education and their communities in their host countries. In his latest research, Dr Omar Hammoud Gallego studies the mass displacement of Venezuelan nationals, using a difference-in-differences research design and a data set of 85,000 migrants and refugees − mostly Venezuelans − surveyed by the UNHCR, to compare the effectiveness of introducing visa restrictions in reducing overall migration flows in certain countries across South America.
