Chief Storyteller at Better Story: I craft words that work for the benefit of people and planet. Author / Coach for writers and creatives.
The first day I volunteered at my local animal shelter, I didn't enjoy it. I happened to arrive at a busy time, there was no one to show me around, and if you've ever heard the sound of 80+ dogs barking, you'll know it can feel intense! I went to help. I wanted to be useful, but as I stood there with people and dogs milling around me, I didn't know how. A more confident person might have grabbed a lead and got stuck in. I'm quite shy in new situations, so I went and hid in the cat house. Much more civilised 😂 Luckily, a lovely and experienced volunteer found me and asked if I wanted a tour. He introduced me to every dog, told me about the rules and routines, and went on my first walk with me. After that, all was well (I now go 4-5 times a week to help out and walk dogs like the gorgeous Glenda pictured above). The shelter is a tiny, under-resourced charity, they need volunteers to function. It's completely understandable that they don't have time for a formal induction. But... how how could they make sure everyone who walks through the gate with the intention to help feels able to? That's something I'm helping them with at the moment: - what to expect when you arrive - setting up a buddy system with a more experienced volunteer - having rules and routines clearly displayed - adding a few words under each animals' name to describe them Volunteers Week is coming up (3-9 June), and if you're planning to recruit new volunteers, you might want to think about how you'll set expectations and welcome people before you design your advert. So, here's a link (in comments) to a useful Better Story blog about just that👇 #Volunteering #VolunteersWeek #CharityComms #AnimalLovers [Image description: Glenda the dog. A medium sized, black, brown and white ex-hunting dog stands happily in long grass looking at the camera. Backdrop of mountains and blue sky.]

As more people are exploring our website and making profiles to start volunteering in the community, we'd like to continue the Intro to Volunteer Peterborough 105. We have a lot of volunteer opportunities on the site, and we know that very few of you have the time to browse through every single one to assess if it's something you can or want to do. That's why we have these wonderful filters. If you have an account, the filters automatically recommend the best possible matches for you, although you are free to check out what else is available. "Skills Requested" is self explanatory. You can scroll through the list and tick every sill you bring to the table. Cleaning, Animal Care, and Handling Money, for example. These preferred skills may match you up with a one-shot "Clean Jackson Creek" or a weekly "help look after the Squirrels at Squirrel Haven Rescue." And there's no rules stating you can't sign up for both! "Causes Benefitted" further narrows the options. If your passion is the environment, it will pull out all the agencies that are endeavouring to save the planet. Combining the Causes and Skills will get very specific results! Again, it's our goal to make selecting opportunities as quick and painless as setting up a playlist. By stating your preferences up front, we make recommendations that match those preferences. Because your time is valuable. We want you to make the most of it. Peruse what's available today! https://buff.ly/3rsamzk Remember: It's ALWAYS FREE for Volunteers! #VolunteerRecruitment #VolunteerHours #CommunityBuilding #Tutorial

This photo is from a clinic in Mexico (2017) that was 6 or 7 days with 12-14 hour days (followed by laundry duty). And it was a rush! I headed the 2nd recovery unit as this is where the dogs "wake up" after surgery, (due to potential behavioral concerns when they wake). This followed the 1st recovery where they received a manicure and pedicure and new hair-do's (the "Spaw"). We had well over a thousand dogs go through, as well as hundreds of cats. Huge success! These offer a great opportunity to meet new people, get involved in the community, learn about the culture, work closely with animals, brush up on your Spanish (or language of the region), and be a part of a team. There is something for everyone and everyone is (or should be) appreciated. From drivers, to caterers, to those who carry the animals from one section to the other, pre-set up and post take-down, photographers, admins and organizers, those who work hands-on, and of course the vets and assistants. I met people who were there on their honeymoon and people from all over the world, and many are involved in rescue that I still keep in touch with today. And, of course, a few of the dogs made their way back to Canada ;-) I am certainly not an expert in these events, nor do I "work under one umbrella with one group". I constantly challenge myself by involving myself in different groups and events and orgs. No two clinics are the same, and there are many options. Having said that, there are groups you can join which means you see many of the same people at different events. Volunteering is a great way to broaden yourself, in addition to being a part of the solution (whoot whoot)! What is your favorite volunteering experience? Or have I peaked your interest? LinkedIn agency // ghostwriter for executives & founders // boost your network, personal branding, client bonds, and turn engagement into success🤍
I volunteer. For those of you who have seen The Hunger Games, I hope you got the reference. However, it’s not exactly that kind of volunteering, I mean. I've always had a soft spot for animals. Their loyalty, their ability to love unconditionally. Animals have always made me happy🐾 But for a little over a year, adopting my own pet wasn't in the cards. So, what's the next best thing? Volunteering at an animal shelter. Here, I get to spend time with these beautiful creatures, give them the love they deserve, and socialize them until they find their forever homes. It's not always easy, but it's worth it—every wagging tail, purr, binky, and lick on the hand. While just being with the animals makes me happy, it's a trade-off for me in more ways than one. Volunteering at the animal shelter has become my sanctuary in a world where burnout is as common as a cold. It's my escape from my busy life, a place where I can recharge my batteries and find my center again. My point is that having an interest that can pull you away from the stress of work, university, or whatever occupies most of your time is a lifesaver. In order to be the version of yourself in everything you do, you need to prioritize doing something just because it makes you happy. Not because you make money from it, learn from it, it makes you look good, it'll sound nice on your resume, but just because it makes you happy. Sure, those are benefits; if they can be combined, that's amazing! But having an interest that simply makes you happy means you're generally happier in life. You become the best version of yourself and perform better in all aspects, including work, relationships, and personal growth. So, find that interest and passion that brings you joy, and make time for it.

Thursdays are both thrilling and scary as hell. It's the day I see each week how well I took two nonprofiteers and matched them. 😱 You see we are MANUALLY matching 1-1 here at The Nonprofit Hive to ensure you get a great conversation. This is why you will have seen me creeping around on your LinkedIn profiles when you first join The Hive.... Hive Matching is based on: - Your 4 preferences you have chosen out of 8 when signing up - Your seniority level - Your role at your nonprofit - The subindustry WITHIN social impact you work in (climate change, animal welfare, international aid, etc) Now some weeks you will get someone so similar to yourself you will go "how the heck did Tasha do this???" And then some weeks will be opposite week and you will get to share with someone TOTALLY different than yourself who also has a passion for nonprofit. Matchmaking is my favourite part of what we are doing here at The Nonprofit Hive and while we will be building a few tools to make it easier for me to match (because there are so many of you now....) it will still always have a human behind those choices. Because 1-1 connection is about as human as it gets. (and also, it is so rewarding for David Norris and I when we crush it on matching). Does the manual part of this surprise you?? Got a great match you've had in the Hive you want to shout out?? Throw your story in the comments!! #matchmaker #nonprofit #philanthropy #connection #socialimpact ___________________________________________________________ Hey there, I'm Tasha and I chat on LinkedIn about marketing, nonprofits, community, relationships and parenting (in no particular order). Let's connect if any of those topics also light you up 💡 Building something special over at The Nonprofit Hive for changemakers who are looking to build connections - make sure to go and check it out 🐝
