As digital biomarkers and measures are increasingly used in cardiovascular research and care, it is essential that we better understand potential sources of bias or inaccurate measurement. In collaboration with co-authors from University of Michigan Medical School, Verily researchers conducted a review of how skin tone may impact the accuracy of photoplethysmography (PPG), which is used in pulse oximetry devices and wearables to assess blood oxygenation (SpO2) and pulse rate (PR). The results show significant discrepancies in the accuracy of FDA-cleared pulse oximeters and commercially available wearable devices across skin tone. The authors share 5 recommendations to improve analytical validation of these devices. The Verily team was at Florence Healthcare Research Revolution, collaborating with leaders from sites, sponsors and CROs on strategies to improve clinical research. Our Head of Product, Recruitment and Site CTMS Lauren Sutton spoke on a panel that explored what the clinical trial technology landscape might look like in 2030, and the challenges that sites and sponsors will face moving towards this vision. Exciting news for the future of biomedical research announced today! A Verily-led data and technology consortium made up of DataTecnica LLC, Technome, Sage Bionetworks, the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and Northwestern University - The Feinberg School of Medicine, has received a $4.8M initial award from The National Institutes of Health’s Common Fund Venture Program to deliver a data platform powering systems biology research across Accelerating Medicines Partnership® programs. The centralized portal and tools, called SysBio FAIRplex, will enable researchers to analyze multi-modal data from 10+ conditions, advancing understanding of the complex mechanisms of diseases.
