It’s time for our weekly #25thAnniversary #Throwback. This week we are reflecting on KSM’s Federal Environmental Approvals, with a look back at the Schedule 2 Amendment in 2017. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗲𝘀 𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗯𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗳𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗧𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 (𝗧𝗠𝗙). "Although KSM's environmental assessment received federal approval in 2014, we required further federal authorization to incorporate natural fish habitats into our Tailings Management Facility. We got that key permit in 2017 by agreeing to replace lost natural habitats with twice as much capacity in man-made ones. 🍃 In 2023 the government published its plan for environmental improvement. With progress stalled, what should happen next? 📜 According to The Office for Environmental Protection the government must speed and scale up its efforts to ensure that plans stack up. 🙏 How welcome then that the new Secretary of State Steve Reed has immediately recognised the scale of the crisis and pledged #urgent action to tackle #river #pollution, restore #nature and build a circular economy. 🔍 This will be informed by a review of the environmental improvement plan but as Richard Benwell and I explain in our new briefing, this review must be neither drawn out nor scattergun.
