FIFA 2026: Toronto's Financial Footwork to Benefit from Global Event Toronto's role as a host city for the 2026 FIFA World Cup has sparked discussions on maximizing local benefits amidst rising costs. The city, alongside Vancouver, will spotlight Canada in the global event, sharing 10 opening-round games. However, Toronto faces a financial challenge as hosting expenses have surged to $380 million from an initial $300 million estimate. Despite limited direct financial benefits projected for the city, officials are strategizing to enhance economic and tourism gains. Mayor Olivia Chow and Councilor Josh Matlow are advocating for federal support, particularly for security costs, and seeking additional private sector contributions to ensure the city not only enjoys but also profits from this prestigious international sporting spectacle. #FIFA2026Toronto #economics #globalbenefits #torontotourism #SoccerInCanada #hostingchallenge #EconomicStrategy #MayorOliviaChow #CouncilorJoshMatlow #SportingSpectacle #supportfederalconservative #PrivateSectorParticipation #torontointernationalfilmfestival #veritasmedia

New research has revealed the estimated economic impact of Emirates Old Trafford, Lancashire Cricket Club’s major events in 2023 to be worth £22.5m to the local economy. Marketing Manchester, the not-for-profit agency charged with promoting Greater Manchester on a national and international level, was responsible for the research. The agency looked at the economic-related impacts associated with staging major sporting, entertainment and business events. Figures have been calculated utilising the eventIMPACTS Toolkit and based on the number of visitors to Emirates Old Trafford’s highest attended events throughout 2023. These include two sold-out Arctic Monkeys concerts, the Vitality Blast and Hundred fixtures, plus an International T20 versus New Zealand and the Men’s Ashes Test match. https://lnkd.in/e3ErEQjM #eventprofs #events #industry #manchester #economy #business #entertainment #sporting #research Daniel Gidney

While it's always fun and entertaining to see the world's greatest athletes converge in one city to compete and bring national pride, it's also interesting to see how cities/countries are becoming more reluctant to host global competitions. Even though the amount of revenue a global event could rake is appealing, it seems that host cities so often underestimate the expenditures, from bidding through completion: 2012's London events went over 75% the budget, while 2016's Rio events needed a $900 million bailout from the government. Qatar faced human rights controversies constructing their stadiums just to ensure they could accommodate competitions and fans visiting. It's no wonder 2023's FIBA and the upcoming 2026's FIFA World Cup preferred to have three countries to host simultaneously with Japan/Indonesia/Philippines and USA/Mexico/Canada respectively. #Olympics #WorldCup #GlobalCompetition #Economy #RevenueVsCosts

It has been highlighted that the majority of #ChineseTourists are opting for destinations within Asia for their summer travels. Despite the allure of major European events such as the UEFA European Soccer Championship in #Germany and the upcoming 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, which have slightly boosted Europe’s appeal, Asia remains the preferred choice. This preference is largely attributed to the convenience offered by visa-free policies available to Chinese citizens in several Asian countries. https://lnkd.in/dQXG4pnM #SummerOlympics #UEFA #ASIA #Europe

⚽ How can major FIFA events drive lasting positive benefits for host countries, cities, and communities? 🏃♂️ Yesterday I had the pleasure of exploring this topic at a panel discussion organised by the Regional Plan Association with my colleague Nic Merridew and several experts, including Prof Greg Clark CBE FAcSS Beatriz Garcia and AJ Colletti, AIA. The focus of our conversation was around New Jersey and New York, as among other cities, they will host the FIFA World Cup 2026™ - Canada, Mexico and the United States. However, our discussion went beyond them, considering the impact of all major events like the Olympic Games. Watch the recording here: https://lnkd.in/gFqZEFxR Key Takeaways: 1. Social Legacy: We discussed how FIFA events can serve as catalysts for addressing social inequality and fostering a sense of unity and pride among residents. Celebrating cultural diversity, involving local communities, and promoting social equity are crucial aspects. 2. Environmental Sustainability: Sustainability was a top priority in our discussion. We emphasized the importance of eco-friendly practices, such as enhancing public transportation and active mobility, promoting sustainable consumption practices, and reducing carbon footprints. 3. Economic Impact: The economic boost from hosting such events can be transformative. We talked about how investments in social infrastructure, tourism, and local businesses can lead to long-term inclusive economic growth. We unanimously agreed that the FIFA World Cup offers a unique opportunity to elevate host cities' and countries' global profiles, stimulate economic growth, promote social equity, and celebrate cultural diversity. Collaboration among multiple authorities and stakeholders will be key to ensuring that the FIFA World Cup 2026 leaves a positive, lasting legacy. By focusing on sustainability, equity, and inclusive economic development, FIFA can make a significant impact on host countries, cities, and communities. A big thank you to Christina K. and Zoe Baldwin for hosting this event! #FIFAWorldCup #Sustainability #EconomicGrowth #SocialImpact #CommunityDevelopment #PublicTransportation #LegacyBuilding #NewJersey #NewYork Arup

BRISBANE OLYMPICS 2032? WE NEED A PLEBISCITE, TO DETERMINE WHETHER WE PROCEED & WHERE THE VENUES WILL BE. The calamitous French Opening Ceremonies had very little French Culture. They did not champion French cuisine. They did not Champion Paris as a city of romance and love. What was championed must be considered a outlier, an extreme failure. Bud light used a transvestite in their promotion in the US supposedly comedic interlude. Bud Light sales went from the most popular beer in the US to the point it could not be sold. The Seine portrayed as a sewer. A sabotage which could have killed train users. Athletes village with vegan food only in France! If this is what the Olympic Organisers have prepared for Brisbane in 2032, let us be frank and we need to discuss cancelling the games before we spend any money on venues. The Olympic Brand catastrophically compromised. how will the TV sponsors respond to revenues which now shall be billions of dollars less than what they should have been? Go WOKE and you will go BROKE! https://lnkd.in/gfdeA6gZ
