The text is divided into segments for this purpose. The matches do not have to be 100 % identical – if a segment is very similar, the text is suggested to the translator, who then decides whether to accept or modify the text. To do so, just strip down to 2 from 32 decoder layers and distil the French transcription capacity! Why the speed boost? Whisper is an encoder-decoder transformer, featuring one encoder forward pass but multiple decoder ones. We can maximize encoder size and minimize decoder size, unlike Whisper models that keep a 1-1 size ratio between encoder and decoder.
