Debates around the cultural survival practice of code-switching, or using professional voice, abound. It’s important to understand that those who code-switch do so for cultural and career survival - but can often not avoid microaggressions. Here is my personal story now on CRN about how microaggressions and microinvalidations start and the impact they can have - emotionally, psychologically, and organizationally. #microaggressions #EquityAndInclusion #InclusiveLeadership

The results are in! 🎉 2023 was officially the year for #CenteringConnection and fostering community. At Girls Who Code, we know we’re not just working to close the gender gap in one of the most powerful industries in the world. We’re also preparing our students for the jobs of tomorrow and teaching them to be nimble in the face of constant change. All while empowering our students and fostering lifelong friendships. We’re super excited to release our Annual Report, highlighting the real impact of our work to build the largest pipeline of women and nonbinary computer scientists worldwide. From rocking out to #GirlJams to inducting our first alumni council and even hosting Code Fair, our first in-person event of this magnitude一 this year has been one of bravery. Girls Who Code has now served 670,000 girls, young women, and non-binary students, keeping us on track for our goal to reach 1 million students over the next ten years. Not to mention, our alumni are earning computer science degrees at 7x the national average! Of course, this wouldn’t be possible without the incredible support of our staff, our Board, our community and, most importantly, our students. By empowering our community with the skills and opportunities they need to succeed, we are shaping a brighter future for hundreds of thousands of young people, as well as a better world for us all. Let us continue to inspire, educate, and uplift the next generation of leaders, in tech and beyond. https://lnkd.in/e_WTZHzX

Since 2018, I have participated as a mentor for the Technovation Girls program. It turns out that the 2025 season is gearing up and the site is open to new participants! I have dropped my name in the hat yet again after two consecutive years of successful mentoring in the program. I hope there are some great potential mentors out there who would be willing to join in on the program. What you need: - patience - a passion for women in STEM - to be a good listener and learner - knowing when not to help - empathy, especially user empathy - ready to be inspired by amazing young women with a desire to help build a better world What you do not need: - lots of coding/software development experience - teaching experience - to answer pointless LeetCode Medium technical interview questions https://lnkd.in/gZJ3A6-C

Friday Spotlight: Coding Trailblazer, Dr. Evelyn Boyd Granville! #BlackHistoryMonth #TechHerstory Imagine a world where computers were just emerging, mainly operated by men, and Black women were rarely seen in STEM fields. That's the environment Dr. Evelyn Boyd Granville stepped into, not as a bystander, but as a pioneer. She defied expectations, becoming one of the first Black women to earn a Ph.D. in computer science! But her journey wasn't easy. Facing gender and racial barriers, she had to be resilient. She had to plan for the future, knowing what she wanted to achieve, while staying present and focused on each step forward. Dr. Granville's story reminds us that: Talent and ambition know no bounds: You can achieve anything you set your mind to, regardless of the obstacles. Resilience is a superpower: Facing setbacks is inevitable, but your ability to bounce back makes the difference. The future matters, but so does the now: Dream big, but savor the small wins and enjoy the journey. Dr. Granville's legacy isn't just about coding algorithms, it's about breaking barriers and paving the way. ✨ Let her story inspire you to be resilient, plan for your future, and embrace the present moment. What challenges are you facing? How are you staying present and motivated? Share in the comments! RISE. REBUILD. Some of the most influential laborers in programming history were women. During World War II, six women held what can be considered the first modern programming roles. Their task was to learn to code with the first programmable digital computer: the ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator And Computer). These women learned to code the machine before modern programming languages or documentation even existed — and taught it to others after the war. However, they weren't publicly recognized for their work until decades later. This is a humbling story about how the most essential laborers can end up being the most undervalued and underpaid, and it's worth a read. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gtW2mWCX #LaborDay #ProgrammingHistory
