"There's this notion that for brands to be cool and break through the noise, that they should not try, and do everything super organic. But honestly, Gen Z likes to see that a brand has put in the time, put in the effort and put in the work to really listen to their audience and to specifically 'niche down' within the Gen Z audiences they are looking at." Besides the fact that 'niche down' is now one of my favorite phrases, I was blown away by Aaliyah J.'s contributions to the Ad Age Gen Z Roundtable on News and Politics last week. The above is just one snippet -- but she goes on to talk about the opportunity for brands to co-create with Gen Z, as well as her point of view on Gen Z's political engagement -- where she reminds us that they are both a generation undeterred from using their voices and the world's up-and-coming buyers and spenders, who care about whether brands take a stance or have a point of view: "I think empowering people who want to be engaged is the best thing we can do for humanity, honestly, at this point." GOLD! So thoughtful, so articulate -- and there is much for our industry, brand-side and agency alike, to glean from this convo. Take a listen! And thank you Garett Sloane for moderating. https://lnkd.in/gPn3A9KT

Have you ever scrolled through endless feeds and stopped dead in your tracks at a post that feels like it was written just for you? That's the power of a thriving social media community, and it's not just about likes and comments. Think about how Dove completely shifted the conversation around beauty with their "Real Beauty" campaign. They built a community that celebrated diversity and inclusivity, and women felt heard and valued by the brand. This, in turn, led to droves of loyal fans who wouldn't hesitate to recommend Dove products to their friends. So how can you replicate that for your brand? The key is creating a space where your audience feels like they can participate in an ongoing conversation. Ask questions, run polls, and encourage discussions in the comments. The more you engage with your audience, the more they'll feel like valued members of your community. Building a strong social media community takes time and effort, but the rewards are massive. Exploring Gen Z: 7 Key Insights about the values of a generation. Working on communication on climate issues and social change, I recently revisited the 2021 "Human Algorithm" study by Archrival on Gen Z values. Despite being a few years old, its findings remain relevant today. Here are my key takeaways: 1. Peer Influence Over Algorithms: Gen Z values peer recommendations over sophisticated algorithms when it comes to taste and beliefs. 2. Political Engagement: This generation seeks brands that help them understand and harness their political power. They urge brands to shift focus from major elections to critical issues like diversity, inclusion, and climate change. 3. Local Focus: Gen Z wants brands to engage more in local politics, encouraging voter registration and participation in local elections to drive community impact before going national or global. 4. Accountability: Gen Z acts as political watchdogs, ready to hold brands accountable for their political stances and actions post-election. 5. Influencer Trust: Traditional influencers are losing ground. Gen Z prefers trustworthy, knowledgeable, and informed figures over those with large followings. 6. Corporate Responsibility: A significant social media presence now demands responsibility. Gen Z expects corporations, brands, influencers, and celebrities to contribute positively to society. 7. Human Connection: Brands need to be real, transparent and engaged. Trust must be earned through consistent, genuine actions. This study underscores the importance of authenticity, accountability, and local engagement in resonating with Gen Z. As we navigate a post-pandemic world, these insights can guide us in building stronger, more meaningful connections with this influential generation.
