Mish’s Daily: Weekly Update on the Economic Modern Family June 16, 2024 This past week, we saw the Gordian Knot tied tighter. As far as the events of the past week and fundamental news review-I am leaving that to my esteemed colleague Donn Goodman to cover in the content area of the Market Outlook. Keith covers the risk assets and produces a video, so I highly recommend you sign up to receive it in your mailbox. For this version of the Daily, I want to get right down to the technical analysis of the Economic Modern Family with actionable plans. It should not come as a surprise to see the Family diverge even further than where it has been over the last 2 months. Granny Retail XRT still clings to clutch support with 74.75 pivotal. That means this week, XRT must hold that level and get back above 76.00 to instill confidence. Granddad Russell 2000 IWM (along with Granny in weekly accumulation phases), also must hold at the past week lows or around 198. Plus, if IWM can get back over 202, stories of how undervalued small caps are, we could begin to think perhaps they are undervalued enough. I got more charts and actionable trading plans: https://lnkd.in/ggNTeu_n

Have you ever heard of seasonality regarding financial markets? It is the study of historical trends, usually based on the month of the year and sometimes the year within the presidential cycle. Over the last 20 years September has tended to be one of the worst performing months for the S&P 500, and one of the few months with a negative average return. What drives this? Many point to those that run big money being in the Hamptons or on vacation over the summer. When they get back to the office in September, they start digging into company performance and projections and making significant portfolio moves. In addition, major industry conferences kick off in September and companies may make downward revisions to their estimates, which can result in selling pressure. Another explanation is investor psychology. If everyone thinks September will be a bad month, they sell first and ask questions later. What can the average investor do with this information? It is important to remember that these are tendencies, and not certainties. In addition, I would never recommend trying to time the market with a sale in August and attempting to rebuy in October. It might, however, be something to discuss with your financial advisor as you think about deploying new capital this time of year. For long term investors, volatility can present opportunities to purchase high quality assets at more attractive prices.

A conversation with Larysa at the Financial Post. My best trade for Canadian investors is to buy US Agency Mortgages (unhedged). Why? 1. Expect the USD$ to outperform the CAD$ as the BoC cuts rates ahead of the Fed 2. Pick up a 6% ish yield on a AAA rated asset as we wait for Fed rate cuts 3. Make capital gains once the Fed cuts rates and the yield curve normalizes
Ed joined the Financial Post’s Larysa Harapyn for an interview recently. They discussed how both the BoC and the Fed may approach rate cuts, and the general outlook for the economy and markets. https://lnkd.in/etxb43xX
