Always a good time to be talking about virtual power plants to a roomful of energy experts! Honored to share the stage earlier this week for a "hot topic fireside chat" with North Carolina Utilities Commission Chair Charlotte Mitchell at Mid-Atlantic Conference of Regulatory Utilities Commissioners conference in Louisville - discussing how virtual power plants can quickly help bring needed electrons to support the grid. #VPPs We are seeing Virtual Power Plants work and deliver real grid relief across the country, as resources like home solar and batteries are put to work for the grid, and help meet soaring power demands.  At Sunrun, we are proud to have over a dozen distributed power plant programs in various phases nationwide, with our pipeline growing. We have 1.5 GWh of networked storage capacity on standby ready to deploy and 12,000+ customers currently enrolled in VPP programs, with more growing by the day. Even better, more states are getting on board with VPPs. We saw landmark legislation pass this spring in Maryland and Colorado, and regulatory-approved programs in North Carolina adding to the growing list of states leveraging these critical resources. Shared some of the best practices from programs like ConnectSolutions in Massachusetts, DSGS in California, and the ADER pilot program in Texas. There are massive opportunities for all states, regardless of political geography, to establish these programs. While each state may have different needs, there are replicable program elements that can work in all markets - but the important piece is to start now, learn and grow these program  to help create a flexible, affordable grid for all.

Exciting transmission news in the Midwest! MISO advanced its second portfolio of Long Range Transmission Planning projects, which would create a 765-kV backbone across the region. The grid operator expects the lines to produce net benefits of $23.1 billion over 20 years and $83.2 billion over 40 years across the Midwest ⚡ Next steps: -MISO committees to review this fall -Board vote expected in mid-December If approved, the projects will come online from 2032 to 2034. Glad to share that my technical paper "Data integrity cyber-attack mitigation using linear quadratic regulator based load frequency control in hybrid power system" has been accepted and is being published by De Gruyter's prestigious journal IJEEPS (International Journal of Emerging Electric Power Systems). In this work Linear quadratic controller (LQR) has been proposed to address the challenges of hybrid power systems. Two-area interconnected power systems are considered in this work with each one having different configuration with respect to source of power generation. Solar, wind, geo-thermal, electric vehicle charging infrastructure and pumped storage power plant are integrated together with conventional thermal power plant for showcasing the LQR based controller under data integrity cyber-attack scenario.

Sunflower Electric Power Corporation was interested in exploring microgrids as a non-wires alternative option to improve the reliability and resiliency of a distribution substation which experiences frequent upstream outages due to being radially fed from a single 69 kV line. A microgrid feasibility study was performed by Mitsubishi Electric Power Products, Inc. PSED team to provide preliminary microgrid designs considering different distributed energy resource options and to allow for a complete evaluation as an NWA solution. Thermal energy storage (TES) is emerging as a key technology for grid flexibility and decarbonization. EPRI, in collaboration with Storworks Power and Southern Company, recently piloted concrete thermal energy storage (CTES) at Alabama Power’s Plant Gaston. The system completed 86 charge/discharge cycles, offering longer-duration, lower-cost storage than lithium-ion batteries. EPRI’s research validated the technology, achieving roundtrip efficiencies over 88%, uncovering valuable lessons learned for future deployments. Single-phase low-voltage grids are particularly widespread in the USA and Australia. The advantages of such grids are that they are easy to install and the investment costs are comparatively low. However, absorption capacities are quickly reached when more and more households install solar systems on their roofs. ⚡ The low-cost alternative to line extensions is our ECOTAP® VPD® I, which also makes single-phase transformers controllable. On the 29th to 30th  May ,I joined the presentations and demonstration of the NEWEPS-project in Alta, for Statnett regional control center north. In The NEWEPS-project (Nordic Early Warning Early Prevention System) Statnett in collaboration with Svenska kraftnät develop a common future WAMS-system (Wide Area Monitoring System ). By using PMU (phase measurement units) in the transmission system in Norway and Sweden. The NEWEPS -project develops algorithms and methods for monitor and detect voltage stability, natural and forced oscillations. These along with development of new 3D user interface, to present the output from the algorithms to the operators.  There will also be developed algorithms for detection of predictive actions and present the output to operators by using the innovative user interface. To do this Statnett and Svenska kraftnät collaborate with partners. RISE, KtH, SITEF and NTNU. The project is partly founded by  The Research Council of Norway and the Swedish Energy Agency. The outcome of NEWEPS will in the future help operators to run the future power system in a secure state, even with less inertia in the system, since most of the future power production will come from renewable energy sources as wind and solar. This will give the power system less inertia due to less heavy or fast rotating machinery connected to the grid. In the picture you can see one happy project-team. 1. During the day, photovoltaic power is generated to supply the load, and excess power is charged and then transmitted to the grid. 2. At night, photovoltaics do not generate electricity, and when the battery power is sufficient, the grid and battery supply the load at the same time. 3. When the power grid fails, the system automatically switches to the off-grid function. Critical loads are powered by photovoltaics and batteries. 4. The battery can be charged by the power grid.
