Some employees in our working area (Factories) may not be working in the laboratory, but they are required to enter it due to their job duties. So today I would like to say something about laboratory safety for non-laboratory Employees. *What are the hazards in the Laboratory? CHEMICAL HAZARDS: - are defined as substances that may contain toxic chemicals. Exposure to toxic substances can cause severe health complications such as skin burns, irritation of eyes, skin, respiratory organs… Physical Hazard: - can cause accidents such as slipping, electrical shock, skin cutting by glassware and mechanical equipment, fire, UV light hazard, and any other radiation. Biological Hazard: - The use of bacteria, viruses, blood, tissue, and/or bodily fluids in the lab can lead to potential biological hazards. These materials can all carry disease or hazardous allergens which could put the lab team at risk. * What are prevention methods? • Do not enter an area or laboratory with a sign that warns against unauthorized entry or says Keep Out, unless specifically directed to do so by the authorized person who controls the space or the Department Safety Coordinator or Department Safety Officer. • Read Hazard and Caution Signs for a description of signs you may see. • Do not move lab equipment or chemicals without direct assistance or approval from lab personnel. • Don’t touch any glassware or any material in the laboratory without the permission of an authorized person. • If you see any spilling on the lab working bench or floor please notify the lab person • Do not eat, drink, or apply cosmetics in a lab. • Wash your hands after leaving a lab. • Wear the appropriate personal protection equipment as necessary • Do not work near waste containers or work surfaces labeled with biohazard, radioactive, carcinogen, or other specific warning signs. • Notify lab staff of any concerns In case of a Small fire in your area: • Pull the fire alarm, even if you think you can successfully extinguish the fire. Use a fire extinguisher if: ➢You have been trained ➢You have a clear exit path behind you Large fire: ➢Evacuate, closing the door behind you. ➢Pull the fire alarm and Contact the responsible person. ➢Wait outside the building in a safe area for emergency personnel to respond •If you get injured or have any incident please contact the lab personnel or responsible person. Have a wonderful and Safe Working day!!!

Safety is critical for lab operations Lab safety isn't merely a guideline; it is the heartbeat that sustains the integrity of healthcare! As leaders, we all must be committed to providing a safe working environment for our teams. In the realm of lab safety, we have come a long way in understanding that safety awareness in the laboratory does not happen by accident. Initial training and on-going education should be a part of any lab safety program. What is the most important lab safety rule? Going by my personal experience I can say, it’s a simple one, but it’s often overlooked: Follow Instructions. From paying attention to safety symbols to listening to an instructor, safety instructions can help prevent accidents. Using common sense and knowing when to ask for help is essential in any laboratory. Additionally, labeling the safety equipment locations and making sure all chemicals are clearly marked and labeled; labs should have plenty of visual cues tied to safety. This includes labeling exits or paths to exits and placing warning signs for unusual hazards and toxic/hazardous materials. Safety exercises and safety audits keeping a general check on the management hygiene whether policies and protocols are being followed or not, are also a must! Lab safety has to be a pivotal part of the overall safety program, and all this can be achieved by having a quality control program in laboratories in particular. Accreditation should be made necessary and all laboratories should be graded as per their performance against a set of predetermined standards. #labsafety #labsolutions #safety #labeling #safeenvironment #environment

Trials and Tribulations of an EHS Consultant! This post is intended to raise a few concerns on the quality of Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) consultancy works or reports. First, the project proponents hijack the process in view that it will lead authorities realising the shortfalls or risks that will be posed by a proposal. These leaves many issues not raised in the report thus compromising the ultimate report quality. Second, the pricing of the works. An EHS Consultant is seen as a secondary participant in a project. This, coupled with marauding quacks in the field, the lowest bidder gets the job. Quacks would easily go for peanuts since they have nothing to lose. Thirdly, the regulatory bodies rarely review the reports once submitted. They just issue an acknowledgment letter and the game is over till during the next audit or assessment. It's a disgrace to watch quacks minting millions while duly qualified persons struggle. When will this end?

Working with organisations to improve workplace health & safety, including handling of chemicals. We also do Food Safety, Fire Safety Consultancy, & Training - Keeping Workers Safe because Safety Matters, LRB Consulting
Some thoughts on Laboratory Safety Laboratory safety is a niche aspect of Health and Safety – the same general rules apply, but the nature of the working environment can create some challenges. A short form list of things to consider include: - Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment: Conduct a thorough evaluation of potential hazards in the lab, such as toxic chemicals, flammable materials, electrical hazards, Radioactive Materials, Lasers, and biological agents, etc.. - Perform risk assessments to identify potential risks, and develop mitigation strategies to minimise or eliminate those risks. - Training and Knowledge: All personnel working in the lab should receive comprehensive training on safety protocols, emergency procedures, and proper handling of equipment and hazardous materials. Regular refresher courses should be conducted to keep everyone up to date. - see blog at https://lnkd.in/eaTxdW2s

The biggest risk in hiring in a veterinary practice? A topic that comes up often in our weekly group coaching sessions in the Veterinary Leadership Academy is how to implement a hiring process that will ensure a good fit, cultural enhancement and retention. How do we make sure that candidates will not only fit but enrich our existing culture? Getting this wrong can be costly, leading to high turnover, decreased team morale, and disruptions to your practice. Alongside our members’ suggestions to be upfront about the challenges and expectations, using candour to ensure candidates genuinely align with the practice’s values, Dr. Dave offers the following key tips. 1️⃣ Pay Attention to Red Flags Early: It’s important to look at the way people behave...these things are all clues. If they’re late, unreliable, or making excuses, this might indicate how they’ll behave in the workplace. 2️⃣ Set Clear Expectations: Clearly communicate your practice’s mission, values, and culture throughout the recruitment process, including in the job ad itself. This not only attracts candidates who align with your values but helps those who don’t to self-select out. 3️⃣ Focus on Values and Behaviour: Beyond skills and qualifications, assess how candidates interact, communicate, and respond during the interview process. These behaviors are strong indicators of how they’ll fit into your team’s dynamic. 4️⃣ Be Authentic in Your Approach: By being genuine about your practice’s environment, challenges, and expectations, you’ll attract candidates who are not just looking for a job but are excited to be part of a team that shares their values. ✅ Combining transparency, vigilance, and a clear understanding of your practice’s culture is key to hiring candidates who will not only fit in but help your team thrive. How do you ensure cultural fit when hiring? ➡ Would you like to learn more about Dr. Dave’s approach? Get in touch for more information or head to www.drdavenicol.com

Dear EHS professionals, Today's explosion in the pharme industry at Andhrapradesh killed 14 lives and injured so many individuals. The accident happened during lunch break, which clearly indicated that there was a lapse in the system of monitoring process during lunch and tea breaks. Hence management has to formulate a clear SOP that should be present during lunch and tea break. This is very much needed in all chemical industries to avoid this kind of incident and accidents in future. Deva. EHS.
