VAI Webinar: Do You Do Maintenance by the Rules or by the Norms? Like many of us, pilots and maintenance technicians develop their own ways of doing things over time. The same goes for aviation companies with regard to operational procedures. Such habits and norms can be effective, but they can also go unquestioned, which can lead to trouble. The seemingly innocent mindset of “that’s the way we always do it” can cause harm when aviation rules and regulations aren’t regularly consulted. Mechanics/engineers who fail to regularly check the manual line for line when performing a repair risk missing a step or an important maintenance update. The same can be said for company procedures if they’re not regularly compared with aviation rules and regulations. If the regulations limit a worker to 12 hours, for example, pushing to 14 for the overtime pay because “others do it all the time here” is a clear violation of the rules. Mark Tyler, VP…
