I saw a recent post from an executive (a former CEO) who had received a couple of different lifetime achievement awards from the industry he spent his career in. The executive said he was honored and rightfully gave credit to the employees of the companies he led. That’s all well and good but making sure those people are recognized at every opportunity is more important. I know someone who traveled all over the world for several years accomplishing major goals for their company. Their EVP even accepted an award overseas for all that work at a major industry event. Great, right? Well, except for the part where he came back to the office, showed off the award to his staff and said, “Does anyone know what this award was for?”. Don’t be THAT executive. The one who doesn’t have a clue about major projects your teams are working on and how long and how hard they’ve been working on them. Likewise, don’t be a direct report to that executive who fails to make sure they know what their people are doing and how it’s contributing to the company. There are things that separate the great bosses — the ones employees all want to work for — from the ones that make people want to work somewhere else. Recognizing the accomplishments of the people who work for you as they’re happening and being openly thankful for the way those accomplishments reflect on you is at or near the top of the list.

Yesterday Chad Horn made the journey to Tampa to meet with us over the weekend to do our AOP planning for 25. I'd like to share how much I value Chad Horn & give him some props. For those of you that know Chad, you'd be the first to admit this is a man that doesn't crack. He is steady as a rock, he is a paragon of patience & is worthy of unflinching trust. Chad is at times annoyingly diplomatic when inside I'm just dying for him to take a side (usually mine!) & he is very practiced at balancing & weighing the opportunities & potential outcomes before opening his mouth & committing to something that might not be the best path forward or could create a situation that could have been avoided had the words not been said. Myself, I'm more of a ready fire aim sort of guy (not something I'm boasting on just a point of self-awareness). The underlying architecture that makes Chad great is his of the charts EQ. I'm sure he gets pissed or emotionally charged like any of us. It's the part where his EQ kicks in & acts as a gatekeeper to what comes next. The point of this post is acknowledging what we are good at & the things we need help with. I'm great at quickly building relationships & getting to the right people. I'm great at on-the-spot creative solutions. Under pressure I settle in like a performance car that reached its cruising speed when the pressure stacks on. I can plan a connected strategy that makes sense & lays out the path, players & dependencies in a few minutes when others might still be looking at the page 2 days later wondering where to start. The point is we all have things we can claim we are great at. It seems in some cases it's really hard to let go, admit where we aren't greatest & have the wisdom to fire ourselves. As we work through our planning this weekend. THIS is likely one of the top questions we need to answer. Where do we layer in help that will free us from the things we are aren't the best at, what are the things we can delegate, outsource or put in the right hands to make sure we don't just deliver, more so that what we deliver is best damn experience & outcomes our clients or even ourselves could expect. I've been in situations in the last few years where I watched other leaders struggle knowing they were carrying bags not meant for them. Some because they were being penny wise & pound foolish. "Well, I just wouldn't make as much money if I hired someone to do this"... Now let's think about that... If you aren't great at it & the function is an OJT for you there is an opportunity cost in the time you are sinking into it. If you are being paid to do whatever it is, & you aren't the expert & are for lack of a better word "tinkering"; your client or your teams are going to be the ones that suffer. Perhaps more problematic is this is the thing that keeps businesses from scaling. The "Do it all my self" mindset. There is only so much time in a day & there is only so much of you to go around. #fireyourselfin25
