When an alternate part is required in the wake of obsolescence, the pressure is on to test it before the inventory of the recently obsoleted part runs out. ⌛ Speed is crucial, right? 🕒 However, I've learned that ensuring thorough testing is even more vital. ✅ 🔹 Ensuring production support for all configurations and maintenance support for older products is essential. 🛠️🔧 🔹 For legacy products, the solutions for production and maintenance can differ due to various factors. A rushed job can lead to pitfalls later. ⚠️ 𝐌𝐲 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡: ☑ As a product manager, I prioritize a thorough initial research to avoid future issues. 🧐 ☑ I also optimize inventory to buy more time for testing. 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞’𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐨𝐩: A critical component in our semiconductor capital equipment became obsolete. 😬 We qualified an alternate part through cross-functional collaboration, but the complexity and cost of installation made customers hesitant to switch right away. 💸 Here’s how I manage such scenarios as a product manager: 🛠️ ✅ 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐩 1: 𝐄𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 📦 First, we assessed our stock of the old component to predict when it’d run out based on current demand. 📊 ✅ 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐩 2: 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐂𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐬 📅 We then informed our customers about the timeline of exhaustion of the old component, emphasizing the importance of timely adaptation of new component. ⏰ ✅ 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐩 3: 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐋𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐁𝐮𝐲𝐬 🔍 We checked with our supply chain for any additional last-time buys of the old component, ensuring a longer runway for our customers. 📦 ✅ 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐩 4: 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐬 🔧 If repairs or refurbishments were possible, we used the repaired parts to meet production and maintenance demands. 🛠️ ✅ 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐩 5: 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐂𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐫 𝐐𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 🤝 Our field team stepped in to assist customers with the qualification process, ensuring a smooth transition to the new part. 🚀 Through cross-functional collaboration and strategic relationship management, I navigated this challenge. 🌐 This approach not only ensured smooth transitions but also fortified customer trust, demonstrating our technical leadership and product management prowess. 🏆 🚀By giving customers ample time to adapt, we minimized disruptions and upheld our commitment to quality and reliability. 🌟 👉 What step would you take in such a scenario to smoothen out the changes?💡🤝 #SemiconductorIndustry #AI #CustomerEngagement #BrightBytesWithRitam Picture source: Critical Manufacturing
