Addressing Realities in the Offshore Wind Market   Last week at the Green Power Denmark Industrial Forum, key insights from Vestas' and RWE's CEOs shed light on critical challenges facing the offshore wind industry. Here are the key takeaways:   · Realization of Market Goals: The ambitious 2030 targets for wind energy expansion are no longer realistic. With a bottleneck expected in project realization in 2029-2030, it's time to reconsider the timeline and distribution of projects to ensure a more achievable path forward.   · Business Cases Don't Add Up: Some business cases in the offshore wind sector face significant challenges, with costs and risks outweighing returns. There's a growing need for a shift towards non-price criteria, emphasizing sustainability, and less focus on harvesting seabed leases.   · Supply Chain Scale-Up: Building up capacity in Europe to meet the demands of numerous projects slated for the same period poses a significant challenge. For now, the capacity seems to be sufficient but the scale-up of the supply chain over the next 3-5 years, especially with the increasing size of components, will require additional production and installation capacity in ports.   The timing of the inflection point between demand and supply is uncertain. However, as the offshore wind energy demand continues to surge, there's a foreseeable shortage of capacity for the production and installation of wind turbines. We have gone from a niche yesterday to a key pillar of today's and tomorrow’s energy landscape.   More than twenty years ago, we began our journey with offshore wind. Back then (for the ones who can still remember 🙂) with just two installed 2-megawatt turbines at Blyth. If I now take myself on a little trip back through time, it reveals the extraordinary evolution we have made since then. And one thing that has definitely changed in that time is capacity. Our Sofia project in the UK, for example, which is now under construction, will eventually boost a capacity of 1,400 megawatts. Driving this growing capacity is the growing size of our wind farms and of the wind turbines themselves. Taking Sofia as an example again: Here we will have 108-metre-long rotor blades and a rotor diameter of 222 metres, whereas our Scroby Sand’s turbine blades are 40 metres long. The larger the rotor blades the greater the output. The power output is a quadratic function of the blade length, meaning if you double the length of the blades, you in fact quadruple the output. That helps us harvest the wind from offshore. But the increased size does come with new challenges, such as logistics and transportation – ships, cranes, port infrastructure, everything needs to be correspondingly bigger.    We are working hard to continuously improve with each wind farm that we bring into operation and together as #TeamRWE we are changing the world with leading offshore wind solutions.

TransAlta Corporation’s 200 MW Horizon Hill Wind Project located in Logan County, Oklahoma, has officially reached commercially operational. The facility is fully contracted to Meta Platforms, which is receiving both clean electricity and environmental attributes from the new facility. With the project, TransAlta increased its US renewables to over 1 GW and provided a clean energy solution to a leading corporate energy customer. The company also entered into a 10-year transfer agreement with an AA-rated customer to sell approximately 80% of the expected production tax credits (PTCs) generated from Horizon Hill. The remaining PTCs are expected to be sold through spot transactions or contracted later. Additional Horizon Hill highlights include: Long-term contracted revenues with Meta who will receive 100% of both renewable electricity and environmental attributes. The facility includes 34 Vestas V162 and V136 turbines, 33 of which have 119-metre towers and one has a 105-metre tower. A 10-year transfer agreement with an AA-rated third-party customer for approximately 80% of PTCs, which are subject to an annual inflation adjustment factor, with the opportunity to contract the remaining 20%. Extends TransAlta’s weighted average contract life of its renewables portfolio to over 12 years. Estimated average annual adjusted EBITDA range between $31 and $33 million, including third-party sales of PTCs. Here’s a sneak peek at an article from our new Autumn issue of Energy Global for the #PreWeekendPreview. In this issue Leo Hambro, Commercial Director at Tidal Transit Limited, addresses the current state of the offshore wind servicing industry and highlights solutions for sustainably transitioning the sector to net zero. Offshore wind is poised for major expansion in the North Sea and beyond. As part of the UK and EU’s drive towards increased energy security and a low-carbon energy mix, the number of new wind turbines entering operation and supplying electricity to the grid is set to explode; and with this growth comes the ever-growing need for efficient servicing. Like all modes of energy generation, wind turbines require thorough inspections and continuous maintenance to ensure uninterrupted, optimal, and safe operations. The transfer of engineers and equipment between shore and site is no easy feat – it needs an expert crew of experienced maritime professionals and vessels that are durable and comfortable enough to safely transit in all weather conditions, and there are number of diligent operators working throughout the year to ensure wind farms have the supply of engineers and equipment necessary to maximise yield from the farm. But herein lies the problem: crew transfer vessels (CTVs) – designed primarily for quick transportation of personnel and light equipment – and service operation vessels (SOVs) – larger vessels that providing a base of operations designed for long-term – burn a significant amount of diesel. CTVs, for example, use around on average 1500+ l/d of fuel in operation. With around 400 vessels currently servicing the UK and Europe, this is a staggering amount of carbon emissions for a service operating at the forefront of renewable energy. In a sector which generates gigawatts of energy from the forces of nature every year, surely there must be a better option than burning fossil fuels?
