We stand in the long and deep legacy of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in his fight against society's three evils: racism, materialism, and militarism. King was a radical revolutionary, a champion of nonviolent resistance, and a warrior for the working class. Let us find our path to radical love and radical revolution—to imagine and create a world free of oppression, free of war, free of settler colonialism, free of genocide, free of anti-Blackness, and free of economic and political violence. #Revolution #Liberation #EndAllWars #EndGenocide #AmericanHistory #NewsRootedInCommunity #MartinLutherKingJrDay #MLKDay #BlackPower #ExistenceIsResistance #BlackNewsroom #BlackFoundedNewsroom #BlackLedNewsroom

Today, we celebrate Juneteenth, a significant day that marks the end of slavery in the United States and honors the enduring struggle for freedom and equality. This day is not just a historical milestone but a powerful reminder of the ongoing journey towards justice for all. Juneteenth, now recognized as a federal holiday, commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, with news that the Civil War had ended and enslaved people were now free—over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. This day symbolizes the triumph of the human spirit over oppression and the relentless pursuit of liberty for all races. As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. poignantly stated, other races "Have come to realize that their destiny is tied up with our destiny." These words underscore the interconnectedness of our freedoms and the shared responsibility to ensure that equality is not just an ideal but a reality for all. Let us honor Juneteenth by acknowledging the spirit of unity and the promise of freedom for every individual. ✊🏽🎉 #Juneteenth #FreedomDay #EndOfSlavery #EqualityForAll #HumanRights #JusticeForAll #Unity #CivilRights #FederalHoliday #EmbraceFreedom

Today in the U.S., we honor and celebrate the life, teachings, and impact of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who worked to create a just, humane, equitable and peaceful world. There are many writings, videos, and audio you can find of Dr. King’s; I find his Letter from a Birmingham Jail to still be relevant, challenging, and motivating towards striving for and making a better world for all. A few selected portions: “…I am cognizant of the interrelatedness of all communities and states...Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. Never again can we afford to live with the narrow, provincial "outside agitator" idea. Anyone who lives inside the United States can never be considered an outsider anywhere within its bounds.” “…Human progress never rolls in on wheels of inevitability; it comes through the tireless efforts of men willing to be co workers with God, and without this hard work, time itself becomes an ally of the forces of social stagnation. We must use time creatively, in the knowledge that the time is always ripe to do right.” “…So the question is not whether we will be extremists, but what kind of extremists we will be. Will we be extremists for hate or for love? Will we be extremists for the preservation of injustice or for the extension of justice?” May we be tireless in our efforts for justice, goodness, equity, and peace. https://lnkd.in/e7zY3uxP

Behind the scenes, whispers of influence persist, akin to the stories of Judas and Barabbas. These whispers endure, woven into the fabric of our world. Associations are drawn, conclusions reached, and innocent individuals caught in the crossfire. The intended sadness lingers, perpetuated by these connections. Now, let’s revisit the remarkable heroes who championed nonviolence: Martin Luther King Jr.: A visionary civil rights leader who tirelessly advocated for equality, justice, and peaceful protest. Mahatma Gandhi: The Indian independence movement leader who practiced nonviolent resistance (Satyagraha) to effect social and political change. Nelson Mandela: The anti-apartheid revolutionary and former South African president who championed reconciliation and unity. Harriet Tubman: An abolitionist and conductor of the Underground Railroad, guiding enslaved people to freedom. Dorothy Height: A tireless advocate for women’s and civil rights, emphasizing the power of nonviolent activism. Their legacies continue to inspire us, reminding us that positive change can be achieved through compassion, understanding, and unwavering determination." 🌟

Today, we reflect on the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a champion of justice and equality for all. While his work is often associated with the fight for civil rights for African Americans, Dr. King also acknowledged the deep injustices faced by Native Americans. In his book Why We Can’t Wait (1963), he wrote: “Our nation was born in genocide when it embraced the doctrine that the original American, the Indian, was an inferior race. Even before there were large numbers of Negroes on our shores, the scar of racial hatred had already disfigured colonial society... Moreover, we elevated that tragic experience into a noble crusade. Indeed, even today we have not permitted ourselves to reject or to feel remorse for this shameful episode.” At California Indian Legal Services, we see this as a reminder that the fight for equity and justice must include Native communities. As we honor Dr. King’s vision of a just and inclusive world, we also recognize the ongoing work needed to uphold the rights and sovereignty of Indigenous peoples. In recognition of MLK Day, our Offices will be closed on 1/20/2025. #CaliforniaIndianLegalServices #MLKDAY #LegalAdvocacy #NativeRights #TribalJustice #IndigenousAdvocacy #LegalEmpowerment

This biography of Martin Luther King, Jr. offers readers a different perspective on his life compared to the commonly quoted and sanitized version. The author, Eig, includes new sources such as recently released FBI files and personal accounts from King's widow, Coretta Scott King. While some may find the revelations troubling, the book delves into King's affairs and even alleges his involvement in a sexual assault according to an FBI report. However, the main focus of Eig's work is to provide a serious and personal portrayal of King's short life, highlighting the intense opposition he faced from police, bombs, Klansmen, and segregationists who held legal and political power. Additionally, the book showcases King's theatricality and his strategic ability to stage confrontations that emphasized the contrast between the civil rights movement and its opponents. #martinlutherking #mlk #blacklivesmatter #martinlutherkingjr #malcolmx #mlkday #blackhistory #ihaveadream #civilrights #marcusgarvey #martinlutherkingday #love #africa #malcomx #martinlutherkingquotes #blm #blackpower #mlkjr #blackhistorymonth #justice #rosaparks #georgefloyd #art #freedom #o #blackexcellence #martinlutherkingjrday #usa #america #justiceforgeorgefloyd
