Rule of thumb - hire for your product first. Hire for operations second. The best, small investment and development shops hire people to manage their product first ... example: analysts, asset managers, development managers, etc. In the beginning, most operations duties like accounting and payroll are outsourced or handled by a Partner. The time comes when operations duties become too cumbersome for a Partner, and the team starts hiring for them in-house. Don't fall into the trap of hiring for back-office duties first. You need to get yourself out of the day-to-day product work.
