While it’s becoming more known that #LiDAR technology has the ability to shape the future of automotive safety and vehicle navigation, there is still some confusion as to the best scenario to use direct detection or coherent detection. indie’s recent whitepaper explores the differences between these two methods in LiDAR systems. For example, direct detection uses pulsed lasers and is relatively simple in terms of processing requirements, making it more suitable for short-range applications. Coherent detection, such as FMCW, involves continuous laser modulation and offers advantages in measuring velocity, precision, and interference immunity but requires more complex signal processing.
