Today, we come together to recognize and celebrate the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of Indigenous peoples around the world. International Indigenous Peoples Day is a time to honour the resilience, knowledge, and traditions of these diverse communities, and to reflect on the challenges they continue to face. Indigenous peoples have long been the stewards of our planet, with deep-rooted connections to the land and a profound understanding of sustainable living. Their knowledge and practices have not only enriched our world but have also been essential in preserving our natural environment for future generations. However, this day also serves as a reminder of the injustices and struggles that Indigenous communities have endured and continue to face, from the impacts of colonization to ongoing issues related to land rights, cultural preservation, and social equity. It's a call to action for all of us to support Indigenous rights, amplify their voices, and work towards meaningful reconciliation and justice. As we observe International Indigenous Peoples Day, let’s commit to being allies and advocates. Together, we can help build a world where Indigenous cultures thrive and their rights are respected. #internationalindigenouspeoplesday #reconciliation

Today, we celebrate the UN International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples. In December 1994, the United Nations General Assembly decided to mark every 9 August as International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples. The date is significant as it marks the first meeting - back in 1982 - of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations. This International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples 2024 is focusing on ‘Protecting the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in Voluntary Isolation and Initial Contact’. Indigenous Peoples in voluntary isolation and initial contact are the best protectors of the forest. Where their collective rights to lands and territories are protected, the forests thrive, alongside their societies. And not only is their survival crucial to the protection of our planet, but it is crucial to the protection of cultural and linguistic diversity. In today’s hyper-connected world, the existence of Indigenous Peoples in voluntary isolation and initial contact is a testament to the rich and complex tapestry of humanity, and it is a huge loss to our world if they cease to exist. Let's honour the rich cultures, traditions, and contributions of Indigenous communities worldwide. It's crucial to stand in solidarity, promote their rights, and protect their invaluable knowledge for a sustainable future. #IndigenousPeoplesDay

The United Nations’ (UN) International Day of the World's Indigenous People is observed on August 9 each year to promote and protect the rights of the world’s Indigenous population. Also known as World Tribal Day, this event also recognises the achievements and contributions that Indigenous people make to improve world issues such as environmental protection. In December 1994, the United Nations General Assembly decided that the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples should be observed on August 9th each year. The date was chosen in recognition of the first meeting of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations of the Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights held in Geneva in 1982. The day is needed, as across the world, Indigenous peoples are often among the poorest ethnic groups in society. According to the UN, indigenous people make up less than 5 per cent of the world's population but account for 15 per cent of the poorest. They speak an overwhelming majority of the world’s estimated 7,000 languages and represent 5,000 different cultures.
