I’m thrilled to announce that I’ll be presenting at the 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗕𝗼𝗮𝗿𝗱 (𝗧𝗥𝗕) 𝗔𝗻𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 this January in Washington, D.C.! My lectern presentation focuses on 𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗺𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘂𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗼𝗿𝘆. This work is among the first to define operating capacity of a multimodal port system 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀. By comparing our queueing-based metric with results from highly detailed simulations at Port of Houston, we’ve found 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀. Recently, I was asked how to become a captain quickly—whether it’s more important to know the river first or the ship. For me, it’s clear: the most crucial skill for a captain is mastering the ship completely. If you fully understand and can maneuver your vessel with confidence, you’ll be able to navigate safely, even on unfamiliar rivers. The older generation often believes that one must know every detail of the river—every current, every shallow spot, every rock. However, in today’s world, where modern navigation systems and digital updates play a key role, this approach has its limitations. A captain who relies primarily on the specific characteristics of a single river might struggle when faced with new technology or changing conditions. This is why I believe it’s essential to focus on knowing the ship itself. A captain who understands their vessel and its systems inside and out remains adaptable and capable, regardless of the waterway. Ultimately, the ability to maneuver a ship precisely and safely in any situation is the foundation for successful navigation on any route and under all conditions.
