Society for the Study of Architecture in Canada 50th Annual Conference Carleton University & Library and Archives Canada Ottawa, Ontario May 27–30, 2025 For its 50th Annual Conference, the Society for the Study of Architecture in Canada will return to the place it began in 1974: Ottawa. The conference will be held from May 27 to 30, 2025, hosted by Carleton University and Library and Archives Canada. The SSAC is now accepting proposals for sessions covering all aspects of the built environment in Canada. Scholars, practitioners, and professionals from any discipline whose work relates to the built environment in Canada are welcome to submit. Sessions may relate to history, theory, design, pedagogy or any issue connected to the creation, experience, impact, and understanding of Canada’s built environment. Those interested in chairing a session are invited to email proposals to ssac.2025.seac@gmail.com by end of day Monday, November 4, 2024. The national capital is particularly well suited to celebrating this milestone in the Society’s history. Sitting on traditional, unceded Anishinabe Algonquin territory, it straddles the border between the two original colonies comprising the United Province of Canada (established 1841), and was named capital in 1857. Ottawa, the Outaouais and the surrounding region remain a vibrant, diverse and dynamic blend of peoples and places. The SSAC supports inclusive dialogue and encourages perspectives illuminating the influence and experience of gendered and sexually diverse, BIPOC, and disabled communities. We welcome and encourage co-submissions by established and emerging scholars. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eFh4N5X

An excellent article on ‘Ecological Architecture + Decolonized Identity’. These two concepts are flourishing in architecture academic programs and professions. You’re welcome to draw your own conclusions. All I can say is that I see little, if any, applications in urban settings, replete with (Western) technical and cultural regulations.

Buildings matter! Architecture matters! Landscape matters! I’ve been going round university open days with my son, and there’s a lot to think about. Yes, the course matters and the teaching matters. But something else matters too: the buildings and the spaces around them. Because it’s the buildings and spaces which make a place. And some places make you feel good, while others don’t. I work with architects so there's nothing surprising to me about any of this, but why aren’t we – as a society, as humans – talking more about this stuff? ************** PS In my day, parents didn’t go on university visits – you went on your own – but times have changed. Now open days seem to be as much for the parents as for the students. Why is that? Is it because going to university costs so much more? #architecture #buildings #landscape #universities

Kharkiv School of Architecture joined the project "UREHERIT. Architects for Heritage in Ukraine: Recreating Identity and Memory" project by developing educational courses for architects on critical reconstruction and research of the heritage of Soviet modernism. Recently, the second conference of the project took place in Stockholm, which was attended by 11 associations of architects from different European countries. The discussion and panel were attended by representatives of the School of Architecture Daria Ozhyhanova, Director of the Bachelor's Program, and Iryna Matsevko, Rector and Lecturer at the KhSA. The panel discussions were intended to become a platform for interaction between European and Ukrainian experience in order to find adequate approaches to working with heritage. The topics of reconstruction and modernist heritage are particularly relevant for Ukraine today. Is it time to delve into the discussion of social values and the search for new meanings for modernist districts of Ukrainian cities now, in a time of war? Do modernist buildings, which are now being traumatized by the war, have a chance for a new life? What role can mass housing play in the context of holistic and sustainable recovery? These questions were discussed at one of the conference panels in which Iryna Matsevko took part. The panel "Capacity building with education and continuing professional development in practice", moderated by Daria Ozhyganova, was aimed at finding ways to meet the need for highly professional specialists and human resources when it comes to heritage preservation and post-war reconstruction in Ukraine.
