VIA is thrilled to welcome our newest board member, Alicia Milligan! Alicia Milligan has lived in Charlottesville since 2004 and brings both legal and nonprofit expertise to the board. She currently serves as the Chief Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney for Albemarle County and has volunteered as a CASA advocate for children in foster care as well as a former board member of Ready Kids, a local nonprofit serving children and families in our community. Her passion for helping children extends to her personal life as well–she has volunteered and held leadership roles within the schools her children attended. Alicia joined the VIA board to help broaden awareness about our mission, services, and impact to help create a more inclusive community where everyone can reach their potential and thrive. We are excited for Alicia to join us and share her legal expertise as well as passion for and experience working with other nonprofits supporting youth in the community.

Every interaction can teach you valuable lessons you can carry forward into other areas of your life. Daniel Cakora here again to share some reflections. Vendavo offers 16 hours of annual paid volunteer time to each employee so we can all give back to causes that matter to us. But this is something my family does outside of that. This year I volunteered for the Jackson Chance Foundation, and this one really hit home for me. Jackson Chance Foundation assists families with NICU-bound children by covering parking fees. My son spent a significant amount of time in the NICU, so I know what that’s like. Not having to worry about expensive parking fees during such a trying time was a weight off our shoulders for my wife and me. It gave us the freedom to visit our son, step away to run errands, and come back to spend more time with him – all without additional financial stress layered atop everything else. This cause means so much to us that we set aside money on birthdays and the anniversary of our son’s “come home day” to make contributions. There are little lessons like that everywhere. Openings for solutions that can help make others’ days a little less stressful or a little easier. Opportunities that matter a lot to the people on the other end of the experience. As Benjamin Franklin said, “When you’re good to others, you’re best to yourself.” https://lnkd.in/g547y64Z #vendavo #employeetakeover #jacksonchance #jcf

Happy Juneteenth! Today is a day for remembrance and celebration of how far the equal rights movement has come since 1865. But it’s also a day to recognize all the work there is left to do. Research has found that BIPOC-led organizations receive drastically fewer resources than white-led organizations. Only around 8% of funding goes to minority-led organizations and only 12% of all giving goes to Black-led organizations. 📌 Learn more about this important day and how you can make up some of the current gaps in nonprofit fundraising through community giving: https://lnkd.in/gAaE5WAt

Philanthropy works to increase opportunity, especially to those historically excluded. The lawsuit against Fearless Fund is an attack on the rights of philanthropic organizations to give in line with their values, as protected under the First Amendment. Attempts to restrict the values-driven work of philanthropy impact so much great work happening around the country and in our region. This would have great consequences for initiatives like the grant we provided to revitalize small-town grocery access for rural residents in North Dakota. There is still time to register for this very powerful and informative training. Thank you Catie White, CFRE for provding us with this amazing opportunity to learn. Trauma-Informed Care is a lens in which we interact with our communities to best support their healing and needs. Tenants of trauma-informed care include safety, trustworthiness, choice, collaboration, and empowerment. Applying these tenants to the fundraising space helps empower fundraisers to build a stronger communications and language that works to include donors in the work of justice and healing. Learning objectives will include how to craft narratives that center lived experience without othering or trivializing lived experience, how to practically apply trauma-informed principles to our work, and how to engage donors in the process of trauma-informed systems that lead to healthier philanthropic interactions and stronger community ties.
