I am incredibly grateful for Emily Caska's advocacy for bringing prenatal diagnosis to the discussion about birth trauma. Research shows that most parents who receive unexpected news about the health, development or genetics of their unborn baby experience traumatic stress. The research also shows us that it's not always the news that is the hard part - for many, it can be the assumptions made, stigma, gaps in care, feeling unheard and unsupported, and when hope is taken away. We, at Through the Unexpected, also sent in a submission to the Select Committee on Birth Trauma. We explored the many different aspects of trauma in this space and how the striking gaps in systems and focus can influence this. https://lnkd.in/gYXCdSGW It's important for me to recognise all the healthcare professionals out there who are also advocating for better, who are listening and working with parents with lived experience and who are open to learning about the many different lenses to see the world so that they can meet expectant parents in a truly person-centred way. We have so much work to do in this space, and over the years, I have learnt that much of that even just needs to start with awareness. There are so many parents each day who receive unexpected news. There are different responses to this news, different pathways and different stories - yet we just don't hear about them. When we can't meet parents where they are, in a person-centred way - we increase the potential for trauma. Emerging research shows this trauma and unmet support needs may also complicate outcomes for the baby in a continued pregnancy and maternal well-being in subsequent pregnancies after a TFMR. There's harm here and we need to discuss it, as complex as it all can be. Thank you to Emily and all the parents who have shared their stories in hope to raise the awareness we need to commit to the important action needed. An honour to be invited to appear before the NSW Government Inquiry into Birth Trauma yesterday. An amateur snippet (sorry, I’m not tech savvy and my mum was bugging me to send her some footage, stat) but deeply important message. A heartbreaking privilege to shine a light on what our loved ones with Down syndrome and their families are experiencing in this day and age. I’ve been involved with Down Syndrome NSW for 20 years, in which time I’ve spoken to many individuals, many families. In my opening statement, I noted that this isn’t an issue affecting 10-15% of our community (though even at that, it is too high). The suboptimal prenatal and new baby experiences in my guess are occurring to at least 95-98% of those I speak to. This is a direct breach of the UNCRPD and must change.
