Our machine learning team at Vibrant Planet includes pioneers in the AI space like Andreas Gros who have done profoundly important work for more than a decade at and before joining Vibrant Planet using AI and ML for world changing purposes. Andreas (Andi) is presenting our vegetation structure models at the #AGU the leading science conference in earth sciences. Hard to overstate how proud I am of this work by our team and how critically important these data are in our work with fire districts like Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District, counties like Placer County and Marin County, California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE), USDA Forest Service, utilities like Pacific Gas and Electric Company in predicting and mitigating wildfire risk to keep our communities and natural resources intact. Two of our other Vibranteers will be presenting at #AGU, Joe Shannon, our hydrologist, is presenting groundbreaking work on post fire landslides/sedimentation and David Diaz is presenting on Generating a Time Series of Forest Change to Enable Supply Chain Reporting for Climate Smart Forest Commodities in the USA.

NOAA’s geostationary satellites (GOES) are advancing methane detection with groundbreaking speed and accuracy, pinpointing large emissions as frequently as every seven seconds. A collaborative experiment with NOAA, Harvard University, and Carbon Mapper demonstrated the potential of GOES to track methane leaks from natural and human-made sources, including agriculture, fossil fuels, and waste management. The experiment leveraged ground, air, and space-based technologies to monitor a controlled pipeline release, validating satellite data against in-situ and aircraft measurements. While GOES can detect only large daytime methane leaks, its real-time monitoring offers transformative opportunities for greenhouse gas management and climate response. The success highlights the importance of multi-scale, multi-sensor integration in improving emission inventories and advancing global efforts to mitigate methane’s environmental impact. Our Chief Scientist Jeff Shrager wrapped up 2024 at a poster session at American Geophysical Union’s December event explaining the science behind Bennu’s new technology to destroy methane in the atmosphere. In the upper atmosphere, UV light creates ozone and then hydroxyl radicals, which in turn attack methane, oxidizing it to water vapor and carbon dioxide. Both of these are significantly less harmful to the climate than the methane, which is permanently eliminated. Bennu’s technology replicates this natural process in the lower atmosphere. 2024 was a highly productive year for our SITES Water Thematic Program, with numerous impactful publications! Today, we’re highlighting a papers that advances our understanding of lake biogeochemistry and carbon fluxes: "A Lake Biogeochemistry Model for Global Methane Emissions: Model Development, Site-Level Validation, and Global Applicability" 🔑 Key Highlights: 1. Introduces a refined model for simulating global lake CH₄ emissions. 2. Incorporates advanced features like lake bathymetry, oxic methane production, and CH₄ oxidation kinetics. 3. Validated using data from 10 representative lakes across different types and regions. 4. Shows the importance of oxic methane production, especially in less productive and deeper lakes. 5. 🌳 Story: Climate researchers are modeling carbon sequestration in forests, facing challenges with vast, unstructured satellite data combined with sensor readings from soil and biomass. ❓ Problem: How can they accurately predict carbon storage over time across varying terrains? 💡 Solution: Try Deep Gaussian Processes (DGP). DGPs extend traditional GPs to handle non-stationary, hierarchical data by stacking multiple GPs. This allows the model to learn complex, latent functions governing carbon storage across regions. Combined with variational inference for scalability, DGP offers robust uncertainty quantification—essential for predicting carbon flux in dynamic ecosystems.

Excited to Announce Our New Preprint! 🌳 🌿 Our latest research; "How atmospheric CO2 can inform us on annual and decadal shifts in the biospheric carbon uptake period” 🌍 A collaborative effort with my esteemed coauthors Ana Bastos, Markus Reichstein, Wouter Peters, and Julia Marshall. 📝 Summary: We explored how atmospheric transport and inter-annual variability in net ecosystem exchange impact the accuracy of carbon uptake period derived from CO2 mole fraction data. Our findings reveal significant damping effects, suggesting new insights in current estimates of carbon uptake period changes. Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal (mCDR) through Iron Fertilisation is one of the main contenders for bringing down atmospheric CO2 to safer levels. Many uncertainties and risks remain though. In this international paper delivered by an expert field, a roadmap of study, research, modelling and community engagement is presented. The work proposes to move forward with understanding the suitability, efficacy, and impacts of mCDR, the researchers focus on five key activities: 📋 field studies in the northeast Pacific Ocean; regional, global, and field study modeling; 🚢 testing various forms of iron and delivery methods, which have differing advantages and disadvantages;  📊 advancing monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) for carbon and eMRV (which focuses on examining ecological changes);  👍 👎 and advancing social science and governance efforts to go hand in hand with the physical science efforts. 🤔 What do you think? The Coastal Carbon Network's Methane working group just published a paper in Global Change Biology, led by Dr. Arianne Arias-Ortiz. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas. In wetlands it is usually produced as part of the natural carbon cycle, sometimes it is a human-caused emission due to land management choices that lead to wetland degradation. In this study, we synthesized raw methane emissions data from 29 studies, 100 sampling locations, and consisting of 15,103 measurements to isolate the main geographic predictors of methane emissions from tidal wetlands for the U.S. Saltier wetlands emit less methane than fresher. Within freshwater wetlands temperature and elevation within the tidal frame are important secondary predictors with warmer and wetter wetlands emitting the most methane.
