We have seen a lot of redemptions in hedge funds 2023. Tough part of being a HF is that usually redemption periods are more investor-friendly than VC and PE. We have to keep our performance good every month, otherwise investors send their money other way. It's like convincing your client every month your product is good! I've seen some chatter online, and I've been asked my opinion of what, in the #syndication universe, has been termed “fund of fund(s).” First, the term "#fundoffunds" originated in the hedge fund universe. There are dozens of liquid alts strategies, including global macro, event-driven, merger arb, convertible arb, long-short (equity & credit), etc. For a mid-size allocator such as a #trust or small pension, a more diversified allocation to all these strategies with a gatekeeper for manager selection made sense, hence the creation of "funds of hedge funds." The "fund of fund(s)" model in real estate syndications is very different. At its core, it is simply a structure through which a third party aids in raising capital for a sponsor. We can debate about incentives and conflicts all day, but I believe this will be part of the funding ecosystem for syndications moving forward for various reasons.

Few observations from the data I researched - Growth vs. Risk: If managers like to grow the capital with risk factors associated with geo-politics, economic tantrums of large world economies like US & China, they should diversify currently with other growing economies like Japan (picking pace), India (Consumerism), EU (new ideas and innovations in AI), Disturbed locations (Infrastructure focus). Risk free rate should be +1-2% beyond average of each major market to sustain the buffer. Cash Holding: Will increase with most of managers to 40-45% levels due to unrest in Ukraine / Russia and Middle East Allocation of Capital: With change in landscape, lot of focus is attributed to Credit, however, CTA is a see-saw domain where allocations are flowing due to import factors and currency fluctuations, major reasons are oil & food items (agriculture & packaged). Thanks to BNPP for this. So as rates increase, managing Margin and Costs is becoming more important for Fund Managers.
