Today, on National Sorry Day, we acknowledge the mistreatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who were forcibly removed from their families and communities. On this date in 1997, the landmark Bringing them Home report was tabled in Parliament. This report shone a light on the experiences of survivors of laws and government policies that saw thousands of children forcibly removed from their families and communities. This historical injustice is still an ongoing source of intergenerational trauma and impacts on health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families, communities and peoples. At HWQ we support truth-telling as part of the journey towards reconciliation. Read the truth of our history in the full report here - https://lnkd.in/gHiQs4HJ

This is what a “minimalist newsletter” looks like (see attached). Just a quick, convenient, clutterless email delivered to you each day with a link to - a story by me, - a link to a story by someone else, - and a message from a sponsor. The 2 stories are related to each week's theme. Oh yeah, and everything is all about 🇨🇦 Canada, Canadians, and Canadian stories. History is happening every day here, and we love talking about it! This week's theme is "Stories of New Beginnings and Renewal." In this issue, I write about Lac-Mégantic's recovery since the train derailment tragedy of 2013. Check it out now! #canada #canadian #lacmagentic #rebuild

Almost thirty years on, many of the report’s 54 recommendations have not been implemented, or only partially implemented. This year’s theme is ‘Bringing Them Home: the unfinished business’. We must urgently act on the outstanding recommendations of this report, before it is too late for those Stolen Generations survivors who are still with us. National Sorry Day marks the anniversary of the tabling of the 1997 Bringing them Home report in the Australian Parliament – the final report of the National Inquiry into the Separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children from their Families. On this day we take time to acknowledge the mistreatment of the Stolen Generations and pay tribute to the resilience and strength of survivors. For the first time, the Commission’s Bringing them Home inquiry examined the truth of Australia’s Stolen Generations. This landmark report shared the shocking truth with the nation.
