Somebody just asked me why I joined Pocketlaw. So, for anyone interested in a personal deep dive of an old lawyer that was confident that mastering legal could add massive value to business but frustrated on how to proceed – you may find this interesting.
I’ve spent almost 10 years as a GC / senior counsel, primary objective being to support business growth whilst controlling risk. Having been fortunate to have joined mega successful companies like Spotify and KRY, we were always on the move to improve and do more (sometimes with less).
I’ve tried everything (workshops, standardising templates, coding of consultancy contracts, hiring great lawyers etc.) but nothing was a real game changer. We were stuck with manual processes, human error, no aggregate overview /status/ping on key contracts / dates -- not to mention all the double work trying to maintain control and a clear structure whilst ensuring being investment ready within 1 week.
I wanted to invest 90% of my time on business-critical issues - and automate everything we did more than once. It was very clear to me that we had nothing to lose (yes, coming from a lawyer!) from using software support - just like all other departments in the mgmt team. On the contrary - the risk of NOT using software support became too big.
We tried many tools, like Juro, Ironclad and Precisely, but none of them was a success. Why? Failed implementation? Maybe - but it was more than that. All these systems were pinpointing specific issues (like contract automation, repository or simple e-signing), forcing us to invest in several tools.
On top of that, these systems were lacking fundamental critical features for success in my opinion such as
🙇♀️ Legal expertise is more or less a prerequisite, i.e. people outside the legal team couldn't get legal done themselves, and the workload was stuck with us lawyers.
🤷♀️ Complicated tools lead to failed implementation and no usage - the upside and user friendliness must be perceived as materially bigger than the actual pain - otherwise people won’t use it. We need to make legal (super)sexy.
🤦♀️ My inhouse team was required to set up the system for success which we weren't qualified to do and of course had ZERO time for. Again leaving us with no help, just cost.
😭 None of these systems leveraged data enough, it was mainly about automation - not feeding me with smart data so I could prioritise better.
I decided to join Pocketlaw 3.5 years ago to support the development of the next gen legal mgmt tool - NOT just for legal but for everyone. That to me is key for success and allows lawyers to do what we do best, setting the playbook -- allowing the team to execute. I used to dream about having my own dashboard and work proactively (like Sales use Salesforce), basing decisions on data, not just my gut feeling. Now that dream is true.
