What 'feel' would you want from a portrait of yourself? That's the question that needs to be asked by the photographer and there are a number of reasons for this. 'Feel' is an interesting word to use on something visible rather than something tangible, but photos really can imbue a distinct feeling or emotion. That might be fun, serious, quirky or many other descriptive words, and I believe it's really important that we consider this when creating portraits. Most people come in and don't know how to pose and feel awkward. I always try to listen to what people's pain points are--what makes them feel self conscious, what are they trying to convey? And then I talk them through it. For some people, the biggest relief is the editing process. None of us are perfect and sometimes it's a hair out of place or a bulge here or there--and that's not a big deal to me. I tell people to focus on their face, the expression, the emotion they are trying to convey. Everything else I can typically edit. Need a little airbrushing? Want to look a little more fit? One size, certainly doesn’t fit all … … at least when it comes to commercial portraits and headshots that is. Consistency and quality are obvious results when using a professional. There is however, more to it than that. Every person is individual, unique and should be treat accordingly. Some people find it easy when having their photos taken and only need a minute or two. Others are often embarrassed, find it awkward, uncomfortable and maybe even painful. They may need more time and a little advice on how to sit or stand. They may want to look through the results as they are produced, learn from the process and not feel pressured. Everyone deserves a portrait that reflects them properly, their uniqueness and that they are happy with. Listening, understanding, being able to adapt, being patient, having care, compassion, empathy and a genuine love for others are all essential when it comes to photographing people. Why I create self-portraits (even though the cringe never goes away!) 🫣 1. Portrait photography can be an intimidating experience. Putting myself in front of the camera is a regular reminder that chatting and engaging with my client is more important than faffing around with settings and lights. 2. It’s an exercise in putting myself out there. As a true introvert, I would always prefer to be behind the camera. But as a solo business owner, I want my clients to be able to relate to me and see who might be taking their portraits. 3. It’s also an exercise in self-acceptance. Up until the last couple of years, I hated my appearance, and I know I had a strange view of myself - certainly a few people commented on it in the past.  It took a couple of personal losses, and working for years with children with additional needs, for me to realise that being an able-bodied, cognitively able person shouldn’t be taken for granted, and having a sense of gratitude for that is all important. ✨ 4. It helps me to understand posing better. What kind of expressions and movements work and what doesn’t, for my body type? And what might work for others? 🤔 5. And most importantly: I can be expected to turn up for the shoot and give myself credit for taking the photo. 🤪 What about you? Do you show up for your business in a similar way? Ladies…. Shall we have a chat about… dare I say it…the lines and wrinkles on our faces?? We have all got them, we are all gonna get more of them, so why do we hate them showing up in our photographs? There are a couple of reasons we notice them more in photos than when we look in the mirror. The first reason is that on a photoshoot you are much more animated than when you are staring at your reflection. You laugh, smile, chat and your face has expression- which is a brilliant thing as it shows your personality. The second reason is the high quality of professional images picks up all the details! Damn that high resolution!! But all of this is good and let me be honest with you- your face looks better with natural smile and laughter lines. This is why as a rule in my edit, I sometimes gently soften lines (if the camera has been particularly detailed!) but I don’t remove them. I once had a client who uttered these words. "Tams, I want to do a photoshoot and I'll be needing just one or two photos." These words are like a secret language in the photography world. A way of saying, "I want your service, but I don't want to spend on it." Deep down, I knew my client wanted more than just a couple of photos. Instead of letting my client go because one or two pictures isn't so profitable to me, I had an honest conversation with him. We discussed: 📍Their budget 📍Their plan for the shoot 📍How we can collaborate to bring their vision to life. During the discussion, I discovered he had the funds but wasn't willing to part with it. But I finally convinced him to. I explained to him what he stands to gain if we had a one hour photo session. So, here's a friendly piece of advice: If you run a business and your client or customer tries to "exploit" you, don't immediately turn them down. I put off doing portraits of my husband and me. Why? Time. There just never seems to be enough to squeeze everything in. As women, most of us are the linchpin of our families. I edit your images down to the very best choices, and then make suggestions on how to display them. We do this all in about an hour. 👉 You don’t have to lose 10 pounds before your portraits.
