This sums up what I seek when taking portrait photographs. "I'm a portrait photographer, and I know how sensitive some people can be about their own appearance, even when the lighting is flattering, so I can only imagine the response from the vainest of Rembrandt's sitters. You see, his portraits are honest. They present his subjects in gritty and earthy tones. He used hard light and didn't shy away from shadows. He seemed to accentuate wrinkles in clothes and faces instead of trying to hide them. He showed his subjects as he honestly saw them-all equal victims of Time and Entropy... [..] His own introspective work is a searingly honest look at a man going through the ups and downs of life, and an un- flinching visual diary of the ravages of time, and the toll it takes on a human face. But when I sit and look at his portraits, I find them moving and arresting. It makes me feel something about our frailty as people, and about the beauty of our humanity being tied up in our temporary nature, and the way in which we age, and degenerate, and ultimately vanish. For me, Rembrandt is telling us capital "T" Truths through his work and not just trying to elicit favourable reviews from his customers." From, "The Meaning in the Making,' Sean Tucker. How important is the truth to you in your business?
