According to the Global Slavery Index, a shocking 50 million people are currently living in modern slavery worldwide, with 10 million of those being children. The reasons for this are numerous, with the Global Slavery Index citing complex conflicts, widespread environmental degradation and the economic and social impact of Covid 19 as just some contributing factors. In this edition of The VICTVS Podcast, we discuss this complex and challenging issue with help from our expert guests Lucy Mann and Marija Jovanovic. Working with British charity Unseen UK, Lucy Mann helps businesses look out for and prevent modern day slavery within their supply chains. With a background in law, Marija Jovanović is a researcher at the @Bonavero Institute of Human Rights and the Modern Slavery and Human Rights Policy and Evidence Centre (PEC). Her work aims to enhance people’s understanding of modern slavery and transform the effectiveness of the law and policies designed to address it. Join our hosts, Xanthe Mitten and Katherine B., to find out more about modern slavery and what we can do to monitor for and prevent it. In this session we will be focusing on the SDG Goal 8 decent work and discuss the 50 million people, 1 in 150 people worldwide, caught in the ties of modern slavery. Despite its invisibility, slavery it is all around us, it is not just a historical problem, or one confined to distant shores. In the UK, there is estimated 130,000 people in modern slavery right now. It is one of the fastest growing international crimes. We have a duty to protect the most vulnerable from such exploitation. The global community has committed to ending modern slavery among children by 2025, and universally by 2030 (Target 8.7). Fascinating read from the Campaign for Trauma-Informed Policy & Practice (CTIPP). Very comprehensive with a lot of food for thought, one being the focus on preventative measures vs. only reactive measures that are not addressing root cause, can be patronizing, and even traumatizing to community members. “By prioritizing systems-level prevention and investing in upstream community-based solutions, communities can lift the burdens of trauma and re-traumatization, achieve a greater return on investment than is accomplished by merely responding to harm that has already occurred, and improve overall community health, thus also building resilience and capacity to future potential experiences of trauma and adversity.”
We need sustainable, cross-sector community change that's: ✅Trauma-Informed ✅Prevention-Oriented ✅Resilience-Building ✅Healing-Centered ✅Community-Led Check out our guide today: https://loom.ly/YuHUCSc #TransformTrauma #TakeOnTrauma

Anti-Slavery Day – An uncomfortable conversation, but an important one. Yesterday, some of our team attended a talk by Maria Bridson from BridsonHalsall on "Insights into Modern Slavery and Labour Exploitation in the Isle of Man." What we heard was uncomfortable and hard to listen to, but it’s a reality we can’t ignore. We are grateful to have people like Maria advocating for change and shedding light on this serious issue. Modern slavery exists, even here on the Isle of Man. From forced labour to human trafficking, exploitation takes many forms, and it's happening closer than you might think. If you see something that doesn’t feel right—suspicious work conditions, domestic servitude, people in vulnerable situations—say something. Report it. Let’s ensure exploitation has no place here or anywhere. #AntiSlaveryDay

Modern slavery remains one of the most pressing human rights concerns of our time, affecting millions of individuals worldwide. Faith-based communities, with their deep-rooted values of justice, compassion, and service, are uniquely positioned to address this issue. Yet, their potential remains largely untapped. At Nigat Global Initiative, we recognize the transformative power these communities hold, not just in individual action but in collective collaboration. While many faith-based development groups are making significant strides in addressing modern slavery within their contexts, the level of coordinated response among them is insufficient to meet the scale of the problem. As part of our systems-change approach, Nigat Global Initiative is dedicated to mobilizing faith-based communities and fostering collaboration across diverse groups. By bringing together leaders from various traditions and denominations, we aim to: 1. Establish spaces for dialogue, shared learning, and joint action planning. Harness Collective Influence: 2. Leverage their vast networks to raise awareness and advocate for systemic reforms. 3. Coordinate Efforts: Ensure resources and expertise are pooled effectively to avoid duplication and maximize impact, and 4. Empower Grassroots Action: Equip local faith leaders and communities with the tools to identify, prevent, and address instances of modern slavery. We believe that by uniting these communities under a shared mission, we can amplify their impact and contribute meaningfully to the eradication of modern slavery. This initiative is just beginning, and there is much more to come. #faithinaction #justiceanchoredinfaith

Breaking the Wall of Slavery @kevinbales via ©Falling Walls Foundation. We often perceive the horrors of slavery as relics of the past, believing humanity has largely overcome this dark chapter. However, this notion is far from reality. Kevin Bales, Co-Founder of NGO Free the Slaves and Professor of Contemporary Slavery at the University of Nottingham, reveals that globally, around 46 million people are still trapped in slavery. From child labourers in African mines to deforestation crews in the Amazon and victims of commercial sexual exploitation in Europe, unfree labour remains prevalent in our daily lives. Contrary to the misconception that slavery is confined to history, it has evolved into a globalised phenomenon, infiltrating production and supply chains worldwide and fueling a $150-billion-dollar trafficking industry. Kevin, with two decades of dedicated research, has shed light on these modern forms of slavery, notably as the lead author of the Global Slavery Index, contributing significantly to awareness. As a researcher and activist, he tackles this intricate issue both at an individual and systemic level. Kevin emphasises that slavery isn't just an isolated problem but is intricately linked to environmental devastation. His recent work highlights that industries heavily reliant on slave labour are major contributors to climate change. At Falling Walls, Kevin delves into the extensive reach and repercussions of contemporary slavery, offering insights and proposing future strategies to combat one of the most disgraceful aspects of the modern world. Empower yourself to make a difference! Watch the full video to gain crucial insights from Kevin Bales, a dedicated advocate against modern slavery. https://lnkd.in/eUu8fBj5?
