May is Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders (HSD) awareness month. This one is close to my heart! ⚕ EDS/HSD represent a diverse family of heritable connective tissue disorders that affect the skin, joints, and other organs. Like many others with EDS/HSD, I live with daily consequences of #hypermobility including joint subluxations, #POTS and hypotension, #MCAS (mast cell disease) and #gastroparesis. 🦓 EDS was traditionally considered a rare condition (a 'zebra' of the medical world), but its prevalence and severity have been significantly underestimated. As a result, the average time to diagnosis is still 10-12 years, and specialist services for those affected remain very thin. ⚖ Balancing work with a (largely) invisible disability can be tough. I'm grateful to have understanding colleagues and a supportive employer who make this possible! Living in Australia, I'm also fortunate to access good hospital/HITH care, basic therapies, affordable equipment, and a lifesaving Home Enteral Nutrition Service when I need it. Not everyone with EDS/HSD is so lucky. 💕 Support and awareness are key to living (and working) well with a complex health condition. If you'd like to learn more about our EDS/HSD "family" or you're a fellow Zebra looking for support, leave me a comment below or check out The Ehlers-Danlos Society. --> For tips to make your workplace more EDS-friendly, see: https://lnkd.in/eviCwuH4 Image description: Infographic summarises information about EDS/HSD, which you can read in more detail at https://lnkd.in/eWPcdz6S

June is National Men’s Health Month, a time to remind men of the health issues they face and what they can do to take charge of their health. Men are significantly less likely than women to see a doctor or report symptoms to a health care provider. Only 60 percent of men go to the doctor for a yearly, routine check up, and 40 percent won’t go until something is seriously wrong. Here are some other important facts about men’s health to know: ~The overall mortality rate is 41 percent higher for men than women, and it’s higher for men for 8 out of 10 leading causes of death—including heart disease, cancer, stroke and diabetes. ~31 percent of men suffer depression in their lifetime and 9 percent of men have daily feelings of depression or anxiety. But only 1/4 talk to a mental health professional, and only 1/3 take medication. Pay attention to signs of depression and don’t be afraid to seek help. ~Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths for men in the United States. A man is 2 to 3 times more likely to get prostate cancer if his father, brother or son had it. Talk to your doctor about having PSA and DRE levels checked. ~Erectile dysfunction affects nearly 30 million men of all ages across the United States. If you’re having problems, see a urologist and make sure it’s not an early warning sign for something more serious, like heart disease, high blood pressure or high blood sugar. 📲Schedule an appointment with your primary care doctor for a checkup to make sure you are right on track with your health. ⚕️Do it for you and for those who love you! https://lnkd.in/eB4Pswuj

Statistics reveal alarming rates of mental health challenges among healthcare professionals. The complexity of rare diseases adds another layer of difficulty as healthcare providers grapple with unfamiliar conditions and the pressure to provide specialized care without clear guidelines or protocols. When discussing rare diseases, considering the mental well-being of those providing care is equally as important as the attention paid to patients and their families, James Boomhower said at the #WorldOrphanDrugCongress.
