Northeast India, a biodiversity hotspot is facing massive ecological devastation, with the delicate balance of nature on the brink of annihilation within the next few decades. With nearly 70-80% of tea-growing lands facing the threat of becoming nonviable, the repercussions of unchecked exploitation loom large. The legacy of environmental exploitation, initiated by the East India Company and perpetuated through subsequent generations, now stands as a democratic threat to everything the region holds dear. It is imperative to recognize the urgency of protecting the biodiversity of the region, not only for the preservation of its rich natural heritage but also as a crucial step toward safeguarding the planet's ecological balance. Hear the experts shed light on the disturbing reality and some ways to sustain what is left. #ThrowbacktoEHNF2016

India takes a significant leap in forest conservation and sustainable development with the revised '𝘝𝘢𝘯 𝘈𝘥𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘺𝘢𝘮, 1980 and 𝘝𝘢𝘯 𝘙𝘶𝘭𝘦𝘴, 2023.' 🌳📜 This comprehensive legislation underscores our commitment to ecological balance, carbon neutrality, and enhancing livelihoods through sustainable forest management. These guidelines reflect India's resolve to meet its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) targets by creating a substantial carbon sink by 2030 and reaffirm the country's dedication to a green and inclusive future.🌍💚 As we strive for Net Zero Emission by 2070, such proactive measures in forest conservation are pivotal. 🚫💨 They not only ensure the protection of our natural heritage but also foster socio-economic benefits for communities dependent on forest resources. I'm inspired to see India's dedication to maintaining ecological security while balancing economic needs. Let's engage in a dialogue on how such policy frameworks can be effectively implemented to achieve our ambitious environmental goals. #ForestConservation #SustainableDevelopment #NetZeroEmission #GreenIndia #EnvironmentalPolicy #ClimateAction #Biodiversity #EcosystemServices #CommunityEmpowerment #RenewableEnergy #NatureBasedSolutions 🌳🛤️🌿🔋🌐

🌍 Climate Crisis in India: A Call for Urgent Conservation Action 🇮🇳 India, ranked 176th on the Nature Conservation Index, is facing an escalating climate crisis with severe consequences for its people, wildlife, and environment. From record-breaking heatwaves to devastating floods and unpredictable monsoons, climate impacts are already here. 🌡️🌧️ Why Conservation Matters Now More Than Ever: 🌱 Biodiversity as a Lifeline – Conserving forests, wetlands, and grasslands isn’t just about protecting nature. These ecosystems act as natural carbon sinks, absorbing carbon dioxide and stabilizing the climate. Every tree and species plays a part in safeguarding our future. 💧 Water Security – Healthy ecosystems regulate water cycles, ensuring a reliable water supply for agriculture and drinking, especially in a country where millions depend on natural water sources. 🌾 Empowering Indigenous Knowledge – India’s indigenous communities hold centuries-old wisdom about sustainably managing natural resources. Supporting these communities in conservation efforts is key to building resilience against climate change. 🤝 What Can We Do? – Collective action matters. Support habitat restoration, reforestation, sustainable agriculture, and community-driven conservation initiatives. Together, we can move towards a more climate-resilient India. . . . #ClimateCrisisIndia #NatureConservation #IndiaForNature #BiodiversityProtection #SustainableFuture #ActOnClimate #ConserveNature #IndigenousKnowledge

Water is vital for all life forms, not only sustaining biological processes but also regulating the climate, shaping our landscapes, and supporting all ecosystems, making its conservation crucial for maintaining the environmental and ecological equilibrium. As we observe the India Water Week, it is crucial to address the growing global challenge of water scarcity. Distress migration due to lack of access to water is a major concern across the world, particularly in regions where water resources are dwindling due to climate and anthropogenic pressures. While India is home to some of the major rivers and water bodies in the world, we fall short in ensuring their effective management, conservation and replenishment. One such resource is the Narmada, the lifeline of Madhya Pradesh, and a sacred river to many. It is integral to the state's economy, culture, and ecological balance. However, the Narmada riverine system is under significant strain due deforestation, over-extraction, and urbanisation pressures. The Narmada Land Restoration Plan (NLRP) is a critical step towards the restoration of tributaries between Maheshwar and Omkareshwar dams. Iora evaluated the ecosystem services provided by the river, developing incentive-based models that not only benefit local communities but also encourage environmentally positive behaviour. These efforts represent a critical step towards enabling a more balanced and sustainable relationship between human activities and natural resources. By investing in such interventions, we are taking meaningful action to combat water scarcity and environmental degradation. After all, water is a fundamental human right – every person deserves access to this essential resource – and it is our responsibility to make every effort to enable that 🌊💧. I write today, in one of India's dailies, Central India's largest newspaper, on Biodiversity Conservation, something that's very close to my heart & field of work over the years. Amplifying my voice for Conservation, whether climate or biodiversity has been an absolute pleasure over the years. Now, being a Core Team Member of the Indian Youth Biodiversity Network of GYBN, the official youth constituency of UNCBD, since the past year or so, it's all the more heartening to showcase my work and ideas to literally lakhs of people, especially the youth. India has been at the forefront of climate and biodiversity action, but at the same time is one of the most vulnerable countries to climate and environment-induced catastrophes. It's significant more than ever before, not just for India and South Asia, but also the world. #Article #OpEd #Columnist #Conservation #Environment #Biodiversity #India #Climate #Solutions #UN #Youth #Asia #Ecosystems #Preservation
