Insightful article by Ganesh Subramanya, Global Head of Cryptography Services Centre of Excellence at Tata Consultancy Services, on the implications of quantum computing for cryptography. As we move towards a more digitalised world, encryption plays a critical role in securing our data and preventing cybercrime. However, the rise of quantum computing poses a significant challenge to traditional cryptograpy keys, making them vulnerable to decryption within seconds. The topic is clearly on the radar of European policy-makers. We had a thorough discussion recently on the topic with multiple Members of European Parliament (MEP's) in Strasbourg. The momentum is picking up, with a group of MEP's including Bart Groothuis, Dragos Tudorache and Morten Løkkegaard, voicing the urgency of transitioning to post-quantum cyrptographic algorithms in a letter (see in comments) sent last week to Commissioner Thierry Breton and his team. Transitioning to post-quantum algorithms is not a simple task and industries will need very soon to assess their quantum-readiness and take steps towards quantum-agility.
