Six U.S. intelligence agencies issued a warning on Thursday to the defense industrial base about Russian sabotage operations attempting to undermine Allied support for Ukraine. 📣 “Over the last year, the Russian government and its proxies have planned and directed sabotage attacks against European military installations, foreign defense companies, logistics facilities, and public utilities in an effort to undermine Allied support to Ukraine,” according to the warning. “Russian intelligence services are recruiting criminals and other proxies to carry out attacks in Europe, and may also try to identify and recruit defense industrial base insiders.” 🚨 The warning included a list of indicators of sabotage operations and mitigation measures that the defense industrial base, and other organizations, can implement to enhance their security. ✍ For Security Management (ASIS International), I wrote about some of these mitigation measures and what steps security practitioners should take based on the warning. Special thanks to Zev Faintuch, head of research and intelligence at Global Guardian, for sharing some insights with our readers for this one. 📰 Read the full story here here ➡️ https://lnkd.in/gCmvR_sB #Security #defense #criticalinfrastructure #geopolitics #cybersecurity

Western Intelligence blames Russia for EU & Nato cyber-attacks Western intelligence agencies have released a joint report accusing a notorious Russian military unit of launching cyberattacks against countries supporting Ukraine. These attacks, targeting critical infrastructure and aimed at disrupting aid efforts, are believed to have begun before the February 2022 invasion and continued afterwards. The same group is suspected to be behind the 2018 Salisbury poisonings of a former Russian spy and his daughter. The attacks spanned across EU, NATO member states, as well as countries in Asia and Latin America. Critical infrastructure, government agencies, and private companies in finance, transport, energy, and healthcare were all targeted. This news comes amid growing concerns by European governments about increased Russian espionage following the war in Ukraine. #USLTRELATIONS // Strong cooperation between the United States and Lithuania is key to addressing cyber challenges. A roadmap for deeper cooperation in cybersecurity and defense was endorsed yesterday, laying the foundation for a practical way forward. 💭 "This day marks an important milestone in our cooperation with the United States. Our adversaries and the malicious actors they support seek to weaken our democracies and reduce our resilience. We must work together and take appropriate measures to ensure a strong cyber defense and an effective response to cybercriminals," said Minister of National Defense Laurynas Kasčiūnas after a meeting with U.S. Ambassador Kara McDonald. The 2025-2029 plan establishes three defense pillars that will strengthen Lithuania's defense in cyberspace: enhancing military cyber defense capabilities, increasing the resilience of society and critical infrastructure, and providing training to ensure collective cyber defense. 🔗 Source: U.S. Embassy Vilnius, Lithuania & Krašto apsaugos ministerija | Ministry of National Defence of Lithuania. #AmChamLT #AmChamLithuania #Defense #Minister #Ambassador

Hybrid warfare, with its blend of cyberattacks, disinformation, economic coercion, and covert actions, has become a key tool for adversaries like Russia to destabilize democracies and weaken alliances for over a decade. As we walk into 2025, it is abundantly clear that NATO can no longer afford to sit back and respond after the damage is done. Proactive measures like bolstering cyber defenses, countering disinformation, and securing critical infrastructure are essential to mitigate threats before they escalate. But beyond strengthening defences, NATO members must also draw clear red lines and enforce them. Ambiguity only emboldens adversaries, while firm boundaries backed by decisive action can deter aggression. It is my staunch conviction that NATO has an obvious, albeit daunting choice: Take decisive action now or face the consequences of being unprepared. #HybridWarfare #Cybersecurity #Disinformation #EconomicCoercion #NATO #DefenseStrategy #CriticalInfrastructure #ProactiveDefense #Deterrence #GlobalSecurity #Geopolitics

Japan is under DDoS attack Pro-Russian hackers launched a series of DDoS attacks against Japanese organization, in response to Japan’s increasing military ties with the US. Russia has expressed concern over Japan’s growing militarization. Japan recently increased its defense budget and has conducted joint military exercises with the US. Moreover, Japan is involved in the development of pre-emptive strike capabilities, and it participates in ballistic missile defense research. Starting in mid-October 2024, these attacks targeted key sectors of Japan's economy and government – including the logistics, manufacturing, and political sectors. The political party of Japan’s newly elected prime minister was one of the high-profile targets. The hacktivist groups NoName057 and Russian Cyber Army Team launched the coordinated DDoS campaign and employed sophisticated attack methods, including utilizing the DDoSia botnet, to maximize disruption.
