It’s that time of year. You may have recently graduated and/or just come back from some summer travel. Now you are evaluating the next steps in your life. What kind of work do you want to do? How do you go about getting it? Maybe you go back to school instead? Lots of options and how do you know what is the right one. Where the heck do you even start? Where you are at is SO understandable. Knowing which way to turn next can be very difficult and scary. You are not alone in this. As a reminder: I work 1:1 with young adults (ages 18-34). I support them in identifying their career direction and guide them through the job search/networking process into landing the job that will launch their career. More information is on my website: daphnewoolf.com or call/text me at: (647) 969-0561.

The biggest mistake employees make is to forget their contract with the employer, they are just transacting their time for money, there is nothing glorious in that transaction for them to be emotionally attached. The best solution is to develop an institutional mindset. Institutions think very differently from individuals. For institutions, individuals are means to an end. Once you develop an institutional mindset, you decision making turns practical and you multiply your revenue streams automatically.
Opinion: One day the career will end, probably either sooner or later than you wanted. Don’t kid yourself that your institution cares about individuals. The point of an institution is that it can function without any particular individuals. The end is harshest for people who draw their identity from their job. https://lnkd.in/ebYYTJM9

What makes a person attracted to a specific job, career or profession? Education could be one answer. Potential for growth and income potential is important as well. But, what about the personality traits inside that person that draws them towards certain areas of work? For instance, if you are a persuasive and confident person who is also energetic and ambitious you may want to manage others, sell houses, become an attorney or work with the public in some way. On the other hand, you may be shy and introverted and attracted to jobs that allow you to work behind the scenes. If you are kind and have an empathetic personality, you may end up in nursing, mental health, social work, or work with the elderly. This week we are excited to introduce Luis De La Rosa who is in his 2nd year! Where did you get your undergrad degree? University of Houston What is your undergraduate degree in? I have an undergraduate degree in Psychology and a master’s degree in clinical social work. What has been your favorite class so far? I think my favorite class so far would have to be personnel psychology. In personnel psychology we learned applied skills to do a job analysis and develop a structured interview which I loved to do. What has been your favorite project? So far, I would say my favorite project was the job analysis that I did for my personnel psychology class. What is your dream job? My dream job would be working at a Texas Medical Center with a hospital system helping them reduce burnout and improve job satisfaction in their medical staff. Where do you see yourself in five years? In five years, I will most likely be established as a good I/O practitioner that loves to help employees. Who are some of your role models? My role models would probably have to be my parents along with the clients that I see in my current job. My parents have always fought hard to give us a better education than they had. The clients that I see at my current job show me that, even though things can be very tough at work, you will continue to do your job because you want to make a difference in the world. What are you looking forward to about your career? I'm looking forward to two things: 1) Learning more 2) Helping others What makes you unique? I am a first-generation bilingual college graduate. I also have experience working with people whose jobs are very stressful.

WOW..I decided to pick up the rakau Kiley Nepia lay down to post content for the next 148 days that may grow my personal brand. I immediately freaked out and thought what the hell truely do I have to say. Then I woke up this morning to return a call to the work prep.program that Winz instructed I attend. The commitment, 8weeks Mon- Fri. I asked if I would be excused for the commitments I already had, a consult with the Justice sector, a lived experience share with Lawyers and Corrections, peer support at the courts, and anything further that those connections lead to that adds to my kete and possible employment. The answer is No. I must attend, I need to "find a way of conveying to potential employers my lack of employment, the large holes in my history, and navigate the OBSTACLES AND ISSUES that imprisonment, drug use, homelessness and my AGE all present!!" I COULDNT CONTAIN MY SHOCK..I gagged on the words and said I and many around me see these as opportunities of shared learning and very valued experience, it was why I had chosen the learning pathways I had chosen and I questioned whether they were qualified to support my journey into Employment if the words they are using already diminish my Mana. Any Employment job seekers are compelled to explore must uphold their Mana. To have a Level 7 tertiary education in multiple pathways and have to complete a competency ncea is insulting and an absolutely waste of time and resource.. I believed the lived experience resource was readily accepted and it's presence in strategy and workplace accepted and embraced but I am lucky in the fact I am surrounded by those that get it. How can those words OBSTACLES and ISSUE, MISTAKES and AGE be acceptable dialogue from someone interned with helping me find a job? FYI..when confronted by my response I was told abruptly to contact my case worker and hung up on.. Tim Bray do you have anything you can add to this please?
