Can’t agree more! I started my career over 10 years ago in lead generation and branched out into various aspects of marketing. I was extremely curious throughout my career so I learned it all: search, display, social, content marketing, email marketing and so on. Over the years the industry confidently moved from CPM and CPC to CPA. Successful CPA campaigns strongly depend on tracking so I learned GTM and how to work all the pixels and setup proper analytics to ensure that all my marketing campaigns are setup for success. If your conversion tracking is not accurate and Meta or Google or another platform is receiving wrong data and you optimize to that data no amount of creative will fix it, no amount of A/B testing or raising your budget. I have seen a lot of setups and you would be surprised what % of advertisers are running their campaigns on false data and frankly have no idea. When your campaigns run on CPA you must provide the accurate “A”! Message me if you need help with that! To wrap up my bragging post that’s really a shout-out to marketers with a broad range of experience I just want to say: If you are looking for a digital marketer who is technically skilled and creatively gifted, message me! P.S. Andrea was talking about your first marketer, but I want to add that any company can benefit from a generalist—someone who understands the entire digital marketing ecosystem and has multiple skills to contribute to a company’s success. “A jack of all trades is a master of none, but often times better than a master of one.” ☝️
Your first marketing hire should be a generalist. Someone who has done a bit of everything. Someone who will work closely with the founder and the people building the product to create a comprehensive marketing strategy. Someone who is comfortable with content, ads, search, and social. Someone who can see the big picture, analyze the competitive scenario and figure out what's the best way to position the product. You can hire specialists to scale later.

Educational Leader | Award-Winning Communications Specialist | 15 Years in Technology and Education | Passionate about using technology to provide equitable opportunities for all students and families
Connecting so much with this idea and how it applies to roles outside of marketing, too. Hiring a new principal? Make sure they’re surrounded by generalist assistant principals and school-based coaches. Need a leader for a brand-new initiative? Hire a generalist to maximize the amount of opportunities created to onboard staff, many of whom may not necessarily agree with the change at first.

I can't tell you how many phone calls we've received over the years from companies looking to hire a PR firm when in actuality they were looking for a marketing agency. There's a lot of misunderstanding out there about the differences between PR and marketing but one of the best explanations I've come across came from another PR firm: "In essence, marketing is focused on promoting a brand’s products with the goal of selling, while PR is focused on promoting a brand’s persona with the goal of maintaining a good reputation. To oversimplify, marketing is about what you do and PR is about who you are." I encourage anyone who is considering hiring a PR firm to first read this to be sure you understand the difference between hiring a marketing firm and a PR firm- because yes, there is a difference. A really big difference. https://lnkd.in/ervcPSSV

Digital marketing leader with 18 years of content and social media marketing experience. People-first marketing and sales proponent. I'm here to assist with your fractional CMO and marketing director needs.
Why should you consider hiring a marketing generalist as your next social media manager or digital marketing director? Because marketing generalists have the experience to manage the ever-evolving space that is your digital footprint and brand. Generalists are not dabblers. While they may not meet "expert" status for any specific marketing objective, they've put plenty of time in the trenches, meaning their experience should be appreciated, trusted, and valued. Most marketing generalists have accrued years in the field. Ten to fifteen-plus years, in fact. Who better to manage a team that works across multiple social platforms and apps? Who better to make sure the graphics match the message and the message shows your brand in the best light? Who better to work with both sales and customer service to create, manage, and deliver a singular message? Back in the day, digital marketers were often taunted by co-workers for "playing on Facebook." Today, marketing generalists are misrepresented as dabblers when, in fact, our extensive experience and knowledge should be heralded and honed to develop the marketing systems, strategies, and solutions of the future. Specialized marketing talent and experience are incredible and should be valued. However, managing or directing a marketing team requires general AND specialized knowledge. If you're looking to fill a marketing manager or director role, don't dismiss a savvy and strong marketing generalist. They'll surprise you with their knowledge, experience, leadership, and work ethic! #DigitalMarketing #MarketingHires

Many of us work in marketing and communications because we are drawn to the creative process. When I ran my marketing consultancy firm for 8 years, I used to look for people who had so much creative energy that, after working hours, they continued exercising their creativity through music or art. What's different about creating art and creating marketing is the number and complexity of stakeholders. Artists make things based on their vision and don't necessarily answer to anyone. Marketers, on the other hand, need a second skill set: developing a consensus around a vision and constantly negotiating the manifestation of that vision. This skill set requires diplomacy and an ability to create and get buy-in for clear processes that prevent every collective effort from devolving into something that is informed by everyone but satisfies no one. One rule I try to communicate to my internal stakeholders is that anyone can always ask for the work to be better. That doesn't mean we allow endless revisions or open vetos. What it does mean is that we can always talk openly about how we can improve things and achieve higher levels of quality. For this to work, those of us creating the assets have to remove our ego from the work as much as possible. In other words, we can't see the output as the reflection of our inner worth. Our work is like a photo: it captures a moment in time but is not a definitive all-telling reflection of who we are and what we are capable of. Ultimately, when we're open to hearing how our work can be better, we produce better work. And for those of us in love with the craft, there can be nothing better than producing better work. The information is always there; we have to create the context so that we can receive, process, and implement it.
