With Mother's Day being celebrated in some parts of the world today, I wanted to share a few of my reflections, as an "older" working mum, if it helps someone reading this. 🌸 Normalize having Brave Conversations. A good friend of mine who’s approaching her forties, had shared that her doctor had recommended egg-freezing. She may not have realized it then, but I’m so thankful to her for opening that discussion some years ago, as it encouraged me to think about my fertility health and options, sooner than later. And funnily enough, it was around that time that I met my husband. 🌸 There is no “Right Time” to Return-to-Work. For many women like me, who have prioritized their careers for most of their lives, it can be challenging to anticipate a new reality where work is no longer the “sole” focus but still an important one. A phased return worked best in my case. That said, the right time is when it feels right to you and your family, according to your personal values and situation. 🌸 Invest Time Intentionally. Becoming a mum has made me even more conscious of how (and with whom) I choose to spend my time. I get organized, delegate tasks where necessary, prep meals the night before, etc. When I’m at work – I’m all in. The same goes for playtime with L and family dinners. And last, but somehow most importantly, 🌸 Don't be afraid to Ask for help. Mums are natural multi-taskers and amazing at project management, however too often to their detriment, leading to stress and burnout. Having a support system can help you navigate through the changes and challenges that come with motherhood. It really does take a village. 😅 🚩 According to our preliminary Return-to-Work Survey Results, a shocking number of women have stated that either themselves or someone they know has delayed family planning due to a lack of adequate support in their professional environment. My journey at my current workspace has had its ups and downs from time to time. It wasn’t tough because of my job or the people, but rather the city. I had just moved to Mumbai and the company gave a two week grace period where I could live in a company guest house till I found a place of my own. But I kept getting rejected during the house hunt. It was disheartening, as I got rejected on the basis of—gender, queerness, age or religion. But I chose to remain resilient and remain true to myself. Eventually I did find a place; it was unwelcoming, had several restrictions and just made me unhappy, but I chose to stick by it.The stress started affecting my work and if you have a lot going on in your personal life, no matter how much you try, you just can’t focus. It’s essential to have a good space to unwind in after a long day of work. So when my team found out about where I was living, they immediately made me move out. They offered me another temporary accommodation till I could find a space where I’d live freely as myself. That support was how I was able to pick up my performance at work. They extended their team spirit outside work for me. My relationship with them has only evolved since then, and I know everyone appreciates the kind of ideas I bring to the table! This is what happens when people actually help people from the LGBTQ+ community. I think I'm the spark, which every team needs. And I believe in boasting about myself, I'm praising myself because I love myself. I've always worked around quality training, customer based work, but HR was something new. After freelancing for years to just sustain myself, I found my space, I wasn’t even intimidated by the workload. My co-workers feel safe around me, because they did the same for me. I make them feel wanted because I know how it feels to be unwanted. It's a reminder that in the richness of diversity lies the true potential for innovation and growth. Celebrating birthdays at work is essential for fostering a sense of belonging and appreciation. It acknowledges individual contributions and highlights the value of each team member. On the flip side, when employees have to remind others of their birthdays, it can create a sense of undervaluation. It’s a missed opportunity for the company to show consideration and build a supportive culture. Some people struggle to know what to say (or post) when it comes to #internationalwomensday.. So I would say, let’s keep it simple and just make a promise to speak up for others when it comes to inclusion 🫶 Some companies are honestly making great things happen, and the amount of Ally posts I see now is great. However, decisions are still being made in businesses today that are different just because that person is female.. Thoughts like ‘I won’t employ them because they might want to take time off one day to have a baby.. but they will want to return to work part time and that just won’t work.. they don’t work full time so aren’t eligible for that promotion’ In 2024, we are still not in a place where it is equal for both mums and dads when having a baby in regard to time off. Or for males and females when considering a promotion based on working hours/experience.. etc etc So until this is better, keep being that voice, that ally and inspiring inclusion in the room/meeting/team you are in. One of my work-from-home employees has been on a long leave because she gave birth to her second child. Today, she came to the office to request resuming her #WFH #job. I had a detailed discussion with her. "Now you have a 9-month-old child, and your first child is 5 years old. How can you spend 8 hours a day on our work?" I asked her. She replied, " I don't want to waste my time at home, and I don't want to be idle or spoil my career by sitting at home. I can focus on my work. As you know, I have been working with our company for two years. Before marriage, I also worked for six years. I enjoy doing computer-related work as I do in my job. I am very interested in continuing. I am confident I can balance work and home equally, as I successfully managed my job when I had one child. Now I have two children, so the number has increased, but my focus on my job has also increased." I was really impressed with her confident explanation, as I already know how good she is at her work. At the end of the conversation, I asked her when she was ready to resume her work. She said, "Today." Unexpected Reply! She is an example for all women. Most women are not allowed or are hesitant to restart their careers after giving birth. At VilPower and MoPower ITES, with a workforce of around 450 women handling non-voice projects in rural areas, we take great satisfaction and pride in providing jobs to employees like her. Yes, women are not confined to their homes.
