What could the North Sea look like in the future and how do we get there? We outline this in our recently published North Sea Vision 2040: https://lnkd.in/ef9ccfcK, which Natuur & Milieu, Stichting De Noordzee, Vogelbescherming Nederland en Wereld Natuur Fonds (WWF-NL) developed together in dialogue with many North Sea stakeholders.   We advocate for an international long-term master plan for the North Sea. The plan should include agreements about the spatial distribution and the way in which economic activities take place in the North Sea.   Central message: Put nature first, we will all benefit from it!

Athens surrounded by flames. Again. It's heart breaking to watch from afar beloved green landscapes burn to black. Devastating to keep asking evacuated friends if their homes are ok. Horrifying to consider the consequences of this enormous loss. Again. These fires, the mega-fires of our climate change era are monsters - very hard to put under control. We need to work much harder on prevention. Engaging the communities, volunteers, the army, working hard over the winter months to clear dry biomass and open-up fire-proof zones. Learn how to introduce biodiversity and resilient species. We've got a lot to learn from Australia, California, Canada, Portugal! It's not rocket science: we need to create a strategic plan that will integrate our forests into the future of our countries, where agriculture will be coordinated with sustainable forest use and management. APPRECIATION 🤝 ACTIVATION With the 'ZEABORN Easter Mix' of sweet treats and seed confetti, we have used the upcoming Easter holidays, the (hopefully) approaching spring and the end of the first quarter to draw attention to the company-wide sustainability survey that we will be conducting throughout the month of April for all colleagues at sea and at our global locations. Even though we have already made more progress in our own journey with the Double Materiality Assessment (DMA) process, it is valuable to first and foremost ask for the perspective of employees, so that they might additionally challenge the items on our original long list... What makes me very bullish is the recent publication of the first DMAs by maritime players, and not just the fact that we will be connected to some extent in the near future. Not only the major European liners, but also some other industry heavyweights have thus started their journey towards CSRD compliance. A wise and respected colleague recently told me that I should not only process my views on the maritime industry's sustainability efforts internally and during our lunches together, but also express them more regularly here...
